I have noticed that when I am reading to myself I end up reading the words out loud. I don't know why but I do. I always tell my daughter to read to herself and then I feel like a hipocritical when I catch myself doing it.
Do what about you, Do you like to read silently or out loud?

I have never read aloud.
It's probably just a habit you and your daughter have gotten into.
I do find myself visualising what I am reading like a movie in my head, and often create a voice in my head that I think the author would sound like as I am reading, as though it is being narrated or read TO me.

That is a cool thought Sparky. I am going to try doing that. Sounds much more interesting that me reading to my self with my own voice in my head. :)

I read to myself, unless I am editing my writing for my books or freelance work,
then I read out loud to see how it sounds,
it is a tried and true method of editing.

That is so cool that you are a writer. I love to write. I too read my own writing (and sometimes posts here) before I send them on.

Hi luvingmygirls. For some reason if I read out loud I find that I can't actually remember anything that i've read, it just wont stick. So for me it's much more preferable to read silently. I'm a teacher and it's very common for children to read out loud, I think it's partly because we teach them to read out loud when their learning how to read.

You know I have noticed that if other people are reading out loud to me I really don't understand it the same as I would if I read it myself.
I think you are right about learning to read out loud.
Maybe I just like to hear myself sometimes.

I read aloud when I'm reading to someone else, or when I'm practicing in order to read aloud to someone else, or when I'm reading something like a poem where the sound makes a difference. I read all of my own writings aloud before publishing them (except casual writing such as here on myLot)--reading aloud is a great way to catch mistakes.
I also read aloud when studying a particularly difficult passage that doesn't make sense when read silently. The rest of the time I read silently. Although you should try to set a good example, there is a difference between your reading aloud and your daughter doing it, because she needs to learn to read silently in order to do well in school and be able to take tests.

I read my books both ways, I read out loud when I read to my daughter, I read my books to my daughter as she loves to hear my books rather than her own. It sends her to sleep and I get to read too! Other than that when reading to myself I read quietly.

I read silently. It kind of annoys me when people read outloud to themselves. It's ok if you read a few things to yourself outloud, but otherwise reading outloud is not necessary. Just read to yourself unless you need clairification or need to read something to someone.

I always read silently... I only read aloud when i have to.
Sometimes when my surrounding is noisy, I tend to read aloud. The words have difficulty reaching my brain. lol.
Nonetheless, I always read silently.

You know what that is probably it. When other stuff is going on I read out loud. Maybe we are just trying to drown out the others sounds. Thanks for your response.

I read silently. I have found that if I read out loud, I read slower. Sometimes though, my husband wants to know what's going on in a book I've been telling him about, and it's a lot easier to just read it out loud than to try to explain it...so I guess I do a little of both!

reading aloud will help you to pronounce the words properly. It also helps in identifying our mistakes noticed by others. We will not be deviated by any thoughts if we read aloud.

i am a silent reader too but sometimes i read out loud the parts that i have difficulty understanding especially when i'm reading my textbooks, and i've been reading the same sentence or paragraph over and over again. i guess it helps that you're consciously trying to register what you're reading into your brain. just my theory hehehe.

It would be silently.
I normally just run through the words in my mind.
Very occasionally though, I would read aloud. This is just for the practice.

I've always been a silent reader. Don't know why but even if I did try to read out loud, it would be a lot slower as well.

I always read silently. But you made me think of something my oldest daughter did when she was little. I think she was about 4 at this time; I was going to college and had to study at night. When I would read, she would get one of her books and join me. I loved it and even though she read out loud it didn't bother me. One night I was trying my best to get something through my head but I couldn't and her reading out loud was driving me up the wall! I said, "Jennifer, can you please read to yourself?" She said, "Ok." Then she proceeded to read in a very loud 4-year-old whisper! lol I couldn't help but laugh. It was so sweet.
Oh, and today...when she is reading she demands complete silence! lol What a change.

I read books silently .Because if I read out loud may disturb other people ,and if I read it out loud I cann't understand the means. I read it silently then I can catch what the books say . But sometime if I try to recite it I will read it out loud .
