Litter Liner

Do you or have you ever used those plastic litter pan liners for your cat box? Do they work like they are supposed to and make your life that much easier - or do the cats end up clawing them to shreds and make more work for you? Are they worth the expense? Can I use a regular kitchen garbage bag fitted over the box with the same effect?

We thought that they would be good. But for out cat they didn't work out too well. Our cat usually ended up clawing through them and it was still a mess. She would even stop going to the bathroom cause she didn't care for the plastic liner in the box. Needless to say we don't use them and we have gone back to what we did before the litter box liners. She's much happier as well.

i tried those with my cats. to make a long story short, they ripped it free, balled it up,and pooped on it. i think that was their opinion of it LOL. but then,i have lil' furry critics walking around.

Hi Modestah, I have tried the cat pan liners and they seemed to be more work than help. My cat clawed at it and tore it to pecies only to realize that it was all over her litter box. She then revolted and refused to use her box anymore, and started doing her business AROUND the box. gross ick nasty ewwwww I got rid of the pan liners pretty quick. lol Once her litter box was back to normal; there have been no "accidents" and I'm happy to scoop the old fashioned way. The liner way, was just not the way for us I guess. :)

No, I do not use a plastic litter liner. I just use a plastic litter pan. I really never saw the benefit of using one or the added expense. I will have to follow the post to see if I am wrong about this.

I used them for a while - they came for free as a sample with my litter box. I found them to be more of a pain because you'd pick them up to take them out and the cat would have ripped a hole or several in the liner and you would have to clean the litter off the floor, rebag the liner and then you would still have to wash out the litter box. Ive actually taken to walking my cats litter across the field to the manure pile dumping it out there then walking back and washing the litter pan with the garden hose and some dish soap. I tried shopping bags as well but again the cat clawed holes through it while scratching in the litter.

I used these with my cat, and they definately made the job much easier! He didn't scratch the whole way through. Maybe if you try trimming your cats claws it won't be a problem?? I'm not sure if the garbage bag would have the same strength...these bags were pretty hefty!

I agree the cat liners are more durable than just a garbage bag. I have tried both and my cat would shred the garbage bag to bits. The cat liners I think are worth the money as the hold up better.

We didn't have very good luck with them when we tried them. I believe that our biggest problem was when you tried to remove the bag... Litter would get all over the place from scratch holes in the bottom of the bag. We then put a folded sheet of newspaper in the bottom and that helped but we never bought them after they ran out. I wouldn't bother if I had to decide again...good luck. Blessed Be, Mari

I've never used those plastic litter box liners, but I have used a regular kitchen garbage bag. Normally I use the smaller ones, like a 13-gallon, and put it over the box, line it with newspaper, and then kitty litter on top. The newspaper keeps the garbage bag from getting clawed to bits. It also makes for very quick and easy clean up when its time to change the litter.

I gave up with litter box liners after Moomin pulled one of them out of the box and spread the contents of the tray over the kitchen floor. Mostly I use an ordinary rubbish bag now, they are cheaper too.

Since my cats aren't declawed, I don't bother with the liners cause my cats are 'china diggers' and would have the liner shredded in a matter of minutes.

I always thought the litter liners were kind of a joke too, but we started using some because we got some with one of the cats we got last year. We've since used garbage bags over the boxs - yes that does the same thing at less cost. they do put holes in both, but you can get most of the dirty litter out with the bag and then box isn't quite as hard to clean out. We have one extra large box we have to use a larger bag over, but the white kitchen trash bags work on the rest.

We use the jumbo plastic litter liners for our litter box. We dont have a problem ever since we switched to a larger liner but when we used the regular size ones they would stretch and there wouldnt be enough room in the box and sure enough, they would be clawed through. I think they are worth it because of the perfect size.. I dont know if trash bags, the regular ones work so well. I've never tried them.

i use the litter liners and would not do without them. sometimes my cats scratch right through it, but not always. i tried using different sized garbage bags because they would be cheaper, but haven't been able to find any that fit properly (other than the industrial sized ones, but that's just too big). i think i'm lucky though, my cats pretty much will use whatever i put in there. i've been able to try different litters and things...

I have used the bags before and in my opinion, they are a huge waste of money. I used them for about 4 months. The reason I bought them was because I figured I could spend less time washing the litterboxes if urine and waste were not touching the acutal box. My cats just scratched through them. When I took the bags out to replace it, litter went all over the place, and made a huge mess. You could try a gargage bag, but I don't think it will work that well. There is going to be a lot hanging over the sides of your boxes, which will be a threat to your precious cat. If your cat is anything like 2 of my cats, plastic is one thing that they love to chew one.

I never had any luck with the plastic liners either. They just seem to tear it and get their claws stuck in it and make a bigger mess.

I have a double litter box. That's to say there are two trays in it...one a solid pan and one with holes in it. You are supposed to simply lift the top pan...the one with holes...and the clean litter falls through the holes and you dump the clumps into a trash bag and your good to go. I find it alot of wasted effort. I have a little scooper, I buy Tidy Step which to me is the best litter ever made and just scoop it every 3-4 days. It takes about 2 minutes, theres less chance of dumping it all over the floor and it's perfectly sanitary as long as you remember to always wash your hands...I've always been taught to wash my hands after handling pet supplies and trash (even dumpsters). **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

I've just started using them and they do help a little though the cats do claw through them. They do make it a bit easier to clean the tray as not so much gets stuck to the bottom but they are so shredded you do need another bag to put the mess in. I got mine at a discount store so they weren't expensive, I don't see why you couldn't just use any plastic bag they would do the same thing.

I used to use a litter box for my cat but I never had a plastic liner - sorry I couldn't help! I don't use the litter box now as she refuses to use it! xxx

We use those and they definately make the job much easier! I would think a grabage bag might have the same effect assuming it fit the tray.

for my current cat, i dont use any liner. just the scoopable litter. it picks up the urine clumps and dried poop. and keeps the what's left in the litter box clean and fresh. but for my late cat, i used to use a plastic grocery bag. i wear it on the box, and pour the litter on top. it was ok. i dont see a need for a liner. but i think i liner would be useful if you use the litter that doesnt clump and scoop, the regular kind, in order to keep the box less messy. scoopable litter is much easy and clean to work with. less mess.
