Should my boss held some money out of my salary as punishment?

I have worked in this company for more than half a year. After the three-month trial period, my boss didn't sign the employment contract with us let alone raise our salaries, just for the reason that the new established company was making a loss. We could understand him and accept that. During the last months, my salary was rather low. The main reason I stay here is that I am sympathy for the boss. We are expecting to our benifits togather. Last month I made a mistake in my work. When I worked overtime to input a bank number into the excel sheet for my customer, the last two figures was changed to 00 automatically. It was not discovered by the boss untill the next day. Then we revised it immdiately and resend to the customer by email and fax. luckily it didn't influnce our work. But on the payday my boss held some money of my salary as punishment. I was not happy for what he did. If I should be punished, shouldn't I get rewards for working-overtime? And what about my loss in the last months? Maybe my original decision of not leaving was wrong. And perhaps I should go now. The society is so cruel. Who can give me some reasonable suggstion?

No. That is very wrong for him to have taken an amount from your salary because of a mistake that did not cause him to lose money anyway. also... did you sign anything that he can actually do that? some mistakes like this that is charged to the employee is called chargebacks.. it is possible but usually happens if there is loss in the company caused by the employee, or you have not charged anything to a client and the client does not want to pay the original billing, etc... Reasons why you should pack and leave... NOW! 1. you have no contract that you are employed in the company. 2. you have been with the company and you see no growth - monetary and otherwise. 3. your boss does whatever he wants just to get back at his employees... - there are no policies, written, oral, etc that you guys, as employees should abide to avoid circumstances like the one they did to you (deducting an amount from your salary.) 4. and last, your company is not doing well - so you too is affected. you cannot stay in such a company cause you need security in work too (financial, for that matter... you have a life to live.) don't wait another month, or year... resign and find a better job with policies, rewards and incentives for hardworking employees. that is what you deserve.

Your persuasive reasons are really what I am expecting to see. How perfect they are! I even can't help marking it as the best response before I finished reading. Thank you very much, chiyosan!

I don't think he can do that if you work the time you must be paid, I am not sure what company you are working for but trust me if you were having problems they would not be understanding, If they are not willing to give you a break then I would start looking for work else where if it was family I would understand but business is business, and you are only an employee.

I agree with you, Robin. No matter for whom we are working, we are working for ourselves. Thank you for your response.

Your boss should not held your salary as punishment, punishment can given in other ways. You should confront to your boss and tell him/her, yes I make mistake due to whatever reason and he has no reason to hold back your salary although the company is making a loss. The last resort to an arrogant and autocratic boss is to leave the company.

Actually, if my mistake did resulted in the loss, I will accept the punishment of reducing salary without protest, but it hadn't have any effect on our business. My boss is undereducated and I think the best way is to leave him. Thank you for your valuable suggestion, titaniumsoul.

you had a bad day....sing a sad song...n just churn it around....its a nice song luckymy...listen to it....things are not going to well in my life also...even i am feeling depressed and miserable, frustrated with myself and angry with others. but what you should remember as of now is that everything is temporary. even you are in a terrible state of mind right now, and making a decision like leaving a job in this state of mind might prove to be wrong in the long run. so as of now, just make a cup of coffee, and read a positive book out in the garden. RELAX!...and no, its not easy to relax, cause you know its not your fault and you are suffering, but you know know what, life isn't fair with anyone, but then only the fittest survive, and to be fit, you need to chill out first and throw away all your negative energy. all the best!

Hello, Daffodil, what you said well comforts me, we should not care more in this cruel society, after all, everything will be gone. But we do need to fight for our own interests. Nobody will protect us except ourselves. So although I said nothing to him when he punished me, I told me that I won't be sympathy for him any more, and when there is an chance, I will go without hesitation. Wishes you all the best, too!

Last I knew it was illegal to withold pay for such things. It is where I live anyway. Your boss sounds like a jerk. We all make mistakes. He should be expressing gratitude for such a dedicated employee.

Yes, before that payday, I had been working hard for him even though he reduced our salary just because the new established company was making a loss. What he did hurt my feeling deeply. I will go sooner or later and at least I have no mood to work hard any more. Wish you all the best!
