who just lost an eye? We have no idea how it happened, just heard her screaming and when we got to her in the back garden half her eye had been pulled out. The vet said it's usually the kind of thing done by cats but there are no cats in this house. I'm staying in a flatlet on my brother's property and they have 5 large dogs so even a stray cat would not have made it to the puppies. The vet said that the eye was too far out and could nt be saved so he had to cut it out. She is such a pretty little thing and only 8 weeks old. My heart is breaking and I wish that there was something I could do for her besides just give her the prescribed medicing and painkillers. I know it's going to take time for her to adjust but can't I help her figure out how to get along with only 1 eye? She keeps bumping into things and chasing around in the direction of the empty socket - almost as if she can't understant why she can't see out of that eye anymore. Has anybody else here gone through this? Is there anything I can do to help her along a little?

it makes me wanna cry when i read your story. i agree with cinder. you should give her lots of TLC's and train her while she's young

omg the poor baby! ive never had to deal with a pet losing an eye personally. boy i would be fighting tears everytime she bumped into stuff!
i guess other than the the medicine and of course LOTS of love, would be to try help her learn that things on the blind side arent something to bite at. cause i can see her developing a tendency to snap at something that approaches her blind side and startles her. so to make sure she doesnt develop that habit, always talk to her when you approach that side, just say "its just me baby" nice and calm of course. but make sure you DO approach from that side, not all the time, but enough that she gets used to it.
as for her learning how to get along..i guess thats just gonna take time. in a way its better that it happened to her so young, she will grow up with the disability and learn to compensate and deal with it better than if she had been middle-aged or so. doesnt sound great to say i know...

Thanks Cinder - I had not actually thought about her developing a snapping habit. I will definately approach her on her blind side too. She is so lovely that I would hate her to develop something nasty like that. Many people have said that it is better that it happened when she is so young and I am inclined to agree - but I keep thinking that she is still such a baby and already she has lost an eye - makes me very sad! But she is beautiful and now I love her even more! Thanks for your response.
