Most people think that they can put goldfish in "goldfish bowls" and they will live fine. This is not true because goldfish need about 20 gallons of water per fish to live properly. This is why so may goldfish (as well as tropical fish die too easy is because they are kept in too small an aquarium). Number one is that the only air that can come into the tank is at the surface of the water and if there is not enough surface area air (oxygen) cannot be brought into the water fast enough for the fish to breath and then the fish will stay at the top where the highest amount of oxygen is and then the people think that the fish is hungry and they will feed the fish which will only make matters worse. Bacteria are in the water that break down uneaten food but they use oxygen to be able to live.
So if you wish to keep your goldfish alive for many many years (goldfish can live to be 35 years old or older) then keep them in at least 20 gallons of water per fish and do regular partial water changes with water that has had the chlorine, chloramine and heavy metals neutralized.
