Chaos at Heathrow terminal five - how do you cope with airport delays?

Have you seen the Tv pictures of the poor passengers stuck at the new terminal five at Heathrow Airport in London? I feel so sorry for those people who don't know when they're going to be able to travel! Have you ever been delayed for a long time at an airport? How long were you delayed for? Did the staff help, or were you left without enough information? On the day they stopped passengers travelling with liquids my boyfirend and I were flying home from IStanbul having been traveling for three months. We had bought lots of souvenirs that we had to carry as hand luggage because there was no space in our backpacks and we thought we were going to have to leave it all behind. Luckily we were OK because we were flying through Amsterdam where there wereno restrictions on hand luggage but if we had been going to London we would have been allowed no hand luggage! What is your experience of long flight delays?

Yes, I feel really sorry for the poor passengers stuck at the new terminal five at Heathrow Airport. It used to be a busy place when it had four terminals. I am sure things are even worse there now. I went there to fly to St Lucia but costumes wanted to search the plane before it next flew out. This led to a four hour delay and then a ten hour flight. So my mum and I were really tired before arriving on the lovely island in the Caribbean. I also had a delay of all night in Athens Airport and many flights were affected. Hundreds of passengers were sitting on the ground because all the seats were taken. That was a tiring and very uncomfortable night on the airport floor. I flew from the Seychelles to Nairobi and had a six hour wait there. The airport lounge was boring and I liked shopping for more souvenirs. I have had flights in the middle of the night and got to the airport the previous evening to wait the time out. I so love to travel.

The only time I ever had to spend the night at the airport was a time i wasn't even flying! My friend used to live in Brighton and we would go out to gigs in London but if we missed the last train back to BRighton we would get the train to Gatwick, sleep there for a few hours then jump on the first morning train the rest of the way to Brighton! I agree with you about shopping, The shopps must be the only people happy about the delays!

It was a great idea if you missed getting home to catch a train that runs all night to Gatwick. My sister used to live in Purley and staying there was very convenient for getting to Gatwick. Nowadays my nearest airport is Bristol and the journey to Gatwick is long but worth it.

hi fizzy! what i do is read, roam around, talk to whoever is with me, sleep, eat. etc. i try to occupy myself because i easily get bored. i ask question but i dont complained. getting into a heated discussion will just make matters worse and i think i will just be at the losing end for losing my temper. anyway, my longest delay was just a few hours, not a day or so. so, so far, so good. how was your trip to istanbul? why did you stay there for 3 months? :) good day!@

Hi! Thanks for your answer. I started and ended a three month trip around the Black Sea in Istanbul so I was in the city only for two days at the beginning and four days at the end of my trip. Yes, I agree with you. I find that (for me anyway) it's best not to get involved in asking too much because i start to get sarcastic and angry.

In all my years of travel, I have not been unnecessarily delayed at airports due to any kind of new implementation. I heard about the delays as a result of the new Heathrow Airport terminal opening, and I feel sorry for those who were hit by the problem. I think the luggage delays all happened because prior to the opening, not enough load testing was done to ensure that the new terminal systems and operations could cope with the loads and restrictions on luggages that might be expected. Just my guess. As in all new massive implementations, thorough testing prior to implementations play a big and critical part in success.

I heaard that when the number of bags hit 12000 the system just shut down which came as a surprise apparently - so it does sound like they didn't test enough. And they had six months in the empty buidling to prepare! Thanks for your answer

It's a horrific situation, but I guess it wasn't too unlikely to happen. I'm lucky, that the only time I've been delayed seriously, I was with a group of friends.

At least when you are with friends you can take turns to go to the toilet, etc so you don't lose your seats! Thanks for your answer

it was just on the news again, they got a few pics from airport source, showing pile and piles of luggages. They showed one person who wore all his clothes to get around the problem. actually it has been nearly seven years since i have been on a plane, i got my luggage quickly then and i had landed at heathrow.

I didn't see this guy! A few weeks ago I wore two coats when flying because I wanted to take both with me but didn't have enough room for my luggage! I was sweltering when I arrived!

I am very lucky to have not been delayed for longer than 30 minutes on a flight. I tend to manage to have a good wander around the airport get a meal and find a book or magazine to read while I am hanging around but obviously if this was going to be more than a few hours then itw oudl be very tricky trying to pass the time.

There is only so long you can spend in the shops - and if you are lucky enough to find a comfortable seat someone might take it if you go looking in shops and you may not find one when you get back! Its a tough decision to make! Thanks for replying!
