I thought Balut Penoy tastes better because I love eggyolks. But the last time I had a balut penoy it was a crap. I like penoy with veins around it as it is tastier. I do love balut but I think chicken balut is better. I don't know why they always make duck balut in the Philippines. Now, I miss that tasty balut here in the UK. But when I get home before this year ends, I will surely request for chicken balut and penoy.

I think 7 days is the perfect incubation time for balut penoy. The embryo is still in it's earliest stage of forming so it still looks like part of the eggyolk.

balut - When I was younger I couldn't even stand eating the chick. It made me sick whenever I look at it, but now I already have the guts eating it.

Thanks! When I was younger I used to eat it in the dark too so, I wouldn't look at the duck. I think people who dont like eating the duck eat it when the lights are dim.

hehehe.. i was never a fan of balut... i tasted it i think once.. just the broth and i didn't like it.. plus i hate to see the baby chick cooked that way... we used to have lots of chickens, i mean roosters here at home.. my dad and bro's pets... they use it for cockfighting, and the chicks were so cute... so it's difficult for me to see them in a shell like that, lt alone eat them...

Eating balut is an acquired taste, I guess. Whenever I buy some, I always ask the vendor to give me "balut sa puti" which has a smaller chick inside still wrapped inside a white membrane. And what I do is I close my eyes whenever I get to the chick part, dip it in vinegar and salt and chug it down.

My dad loved balut, so he would always have a couple of them every night. But I didn't like the look of it at all. I always thought it was gross to be eating the chick. He would give me the yellow part, and that was the only good part for me. When I was into ballroom dancing, my friends would bring a lot of balut with them. They say it makes the knees strong. I never had any, though. So you can dance much longer. But some say that too much balut can cause high blood pressure because it has lots of cholesterol in it.

I agree with cholesterol thing..Its true but to make one knees' stronger maybe it is..lol, when I was an avid eater before use to eat in a dark place and never ever stare on it..soo yummy truly but in the long run you cant deny there are cases you can really see the dark portion..makes me feel sick so i stop eating but "balot pinoy"..mere yellow and white..I still love it!!

Hello Hatley, balut is an egg incubated like 7-21 days, you can choose from there and 16-21 has already chick on it! I don't like to make you feel sick if ever you don't eat it, just want to describe as much as I can! I use to it before but I can't take the 21 days now! Thanks for dropping by!

I do, it tastes good especially the yellow think ang the liquid thing. hehe. But not the chick, i think i you eat the chick you would feel its beak and other hard parts when its in your mouth and when you try to swallow it. Its really a pity for the chick, it just doesnt feel nice chewing the chick in your mouth. hehe.. :P

thanks for sharing jewilim! I have not tried also beyond 16 days! LOL!

balot - chicken
We have the same about balot. I started to eat that when i was fourteen, and now i am 27, i still eat but only the yolk or the red one. Not the chick inside. It's like that i can't swallow it anymore, but when i am low blood and lack of sleep, i really force myself to eat cause as long as i can prevent medicine i will. It can really boost my blood level. I remember when i was forteen, i was so thin, then everynight, i eat balot and gain lot of weight and became average body.

I do, I do! =) I love balut. Although I don't est it as much asa I used to anymore. I like to eat it with salt and spicy vinegar. It's sooo good. There are time s that I eat the whole thing but only if the chick inside isn't yet fully formed. But when I can already see the beak, legs - I don't eat it anymore only the yellow portion. ~

You just gotta have the juice, no questions about it. =) Don't know up to how old I eat as long as I still can't see the beak and legs and not too hairy. hahaha

I still eat them, but I prefer those which are freshly served and still hot. I remember one time, as I spent my summer somewhere in Batangas. Every 2:00 in the afternoon, an old man with a basket would walk the place where we'd spent the afternoon. He sells balut, hot and fresh. We'll then wave at him, buy three to four balut for me and my uncle, we'll chow down at it even if our hands get burned at those hot shells. The vinegar sauce is good, along with salt too.. But I never really buy those cold one's, I'm not used to it and I find it disturbing..

I agree raijin, It's always yummmy when it is hot and fresh, with a cold coke for..hmmmmmmmmmm..I can eat 2-3 before but only 16 days! I stopped for like 3 years already but I am still looking forward to taste it again, maybe the one without chick!

my wife is from the philippines and she tried to get me to eat balut but i refused..i was raised on a farm in Michigan but we always "candled" the eggs and would never eat a fertilized egg..but maybe if i grew up eating balut i would think about doing this..but my wife is not a strong balut eater either...her excuse is that its too expensive in the US to eat Balut. thanks for the interesting question..and post..it is most interesting question..

But now I can't really eat the 'sisiw' now for some culture changes. hahaha... I love the hard bit now ^_^ and that's i eat. I seldom eat the sisiw nalang! hahaha.. I enjoy my balut with vinegar with chili!!! ^_^

Hello mz_Ira, I agree with you, now that I am a little bit older.LOL, I can't take it anymore the chick! I can eat the yellow part and the hard part but not the yucky portion! Thanks for dropping by!

Yes and No. I eat balut but not all of it. I only like the juice that comes out of it and the yellow part of it. The yacky part, no way. I can't even look at it. That is why, I would eat balut with a spoon. so that I will be able to scoop out the yellow part and get rid of the rest.

LOL, I agree with you, the juice and the yellow part taste very good but I have tried also the yucky part before and learn to eat it without glancing it and trying not to imagine it. But, I can't do it now! thanks for dropping by!
