Sunbed Tan, Fake Tan Or a Wait For The SunTan?...

Hopefully summer is on its way very soon, and this is usually the time I start thinking about my summer clothes, and milk white legs!! With all the dangers that I hear attached to over usage or usage of sunbeds, I tend not to bother with them, I cannot use proper fake tan as I get myself in a right mess with it and usually end up a chocolate orange colour. So I use that moisturiser cream that has a hint of tan in it, and it is really good and just tans you up enough to get rid of that milk white colour that I am at the minute!! I actually use this instead of sitting in the sun.
What about anyone else, do you bother with anything when your legs first come out on display in the summer or do you just wait for the sun? Have you had any fake tan disasters?

I own a tanning bed. So I tan in it. I have laid out in the sun though but that takes to long. I lay in the tanning bed for 30 mins. and get the same thing as if I laid out for hours. I tan long enough to give me color another than white. I don't like to wear shorts when my legs are white as a ghost.
I have tried self tanners and ended up with orange knees and elbows. So thats not for me.

No I hate showing my legs when they are ghost like! It is funny how tanning creams seem to stick and show up on elbows and knees the most!

You obviously haven't seen me! lol That milk bottle white skin you are talking about is me with a tan! When I got married in Greece everyone joked that I went there blue and came back white! No fake tan or tan moisturiser works on my skin and neither does a sunbed so I just have to make the most of my colouring and laugh when people compare their tans to me! xxx

brilliant, and nothing works on you? You must be resiliant to them, they give me just a lovely colouring, as long as I do not put too much on or else I just turn orange!

Hi gemini. Tanning. One more thing we have been told we must have to look good. The problem with this is the same as the problem with so much of how others opinions matter.
I am a Nordic Blonde. That means, my lily white skin is close to the white on this page. My hair is naturally blonde. The depth of blonde, or I should say the shade is regulated by the seasons, depending on how much sun my hair gets.
My eyelashes and eye brows are so light it looks like I don't have any. When I was very young, they called me toehead, meaning very light blonde.
I've tried over the years tanning beds, laying in the sun, fake tans, spray on, rub on, lotions, mists, - well, you name it. The only time I ever had a tan - in my entire life was when I lived in Hawaii. You can't live there and not get one sooner or later.
I decided years ago, my skin is very light. With the damage one can get from tans, with the problems connected with chemicals to tan your skin, and the rest.....I'm going out in public, camping, boating and gardening with my lily white skin protected from the sun. I've learned to accept my fair skin and be proud of it. So tanning was thrown out of my life years ago. I'm not concerned about tanning anymore and if someone tells me I should get one, all I can say is, 'been there done that'....and go on about my business. The whiter the better......

How lovely to live in Hawaii, I can imagine that your skin is very white with being that blonde. I am blonde but only because I bought it in a box!! It does not suit my skin colour though and so I am now attempting to get it a bit darker now.

I've never done this before as I already love my skin color, but I have to say though... I heard that having a tan specially under the sun is pretty dangerous, not only are you more prone to skin cancer with long exposure but as you grow older you would easily get wrinkles.
Having a tan might look good, but I would rather avoid these stuffs if it might do me harm in the long run.

Going on sunbeds and sitting in the sun too long will definately do you harm long term, I am pure white and so when I get my legs out I blind everyone!! I like to just put a little bit of a fake tan on just to take the glare out of my legs he he.

Im hoping summer is comming to. I myself like to tan in the sun. I use a dark tanning oil and I get a real nice tan in a couple days. I cant wait for the sun to come out so I can lay around and tan. I love it. The kids get to play in the yard and Im right there tanning if they need me. I do make sure to put sun screen on them though because I dont want them burnt. They always end up with a nice tan as well but its safe for them.
I have never tried a taning bed and dont think I will. I really like the sun to much. Although a friend of mine told me theres a place in town that cost 45$ a month and you can tan everyday if you want. But then again why spend money when the sun is free??

Fake tan all the way for me! My skin is pale and my legs especially take forever to tan naturally, and we don't get that much sun in the uk either! Both the sun and sunbeds can be harmfull for skin so i prefer just to use fake tan. I noyl use it on my legs anyway to take the edge of the whiteness and i don't overdo it, just give myself a bit of a tan.

Totally with you on this.
I love having a tan, it makes you feel more confident with yourself and your body. I do tan quite easily, but skin cancer scares mean I like using a fake tan and then its win - win! Also means its a year round tan, brilliant!

I susally just wait for the sun to get a bit of a tan but then I feel bad about it becuase the sun is so bad for you. I will probably just get a bit of a tan at the beach or at my husband's parents pool or something though. However sometimes I do you self-tanner. The brand I use is Marcell and it works really well, it looks realistic as long as you make sure that you apply it evenly. You should try it out. One time i bought a bottle and used the whole bottle in one night, putting on coat after coat, the next day I went to work and a co-worked stared at me for about 5 minutes before demanding to know where I went after work the day before because my tan looked so real it confused her.

If you are going to do that let me give you my tips. Buy the spray, not the cream. You do not need the special face product just get the spray. Exfoliate your whole body really well before applying it. Use lotion on your hands and any dry spots like knees. Spray it on one body part at a time and then rub it in with your hands to make sure its even. Apply it to your face by spraying it onto the palm of your hand and then rubbing it into your face. When you are done applying, use a bunch of scrub all over your hands to get teh build up off so your hand won't turn orange.

I stopped sitting in the sun years ago, I got badly burned a couple of times and then all the things that you hear about it just put me off. I will have to have a look for that marcell in my shops.

Lucky you Summer on its way, we are the opposite winter on its way here. SO looks like my legs will getting whiter, lol. I am too worried about the solariums too, as you here some stories of people dieing. I love those creams, the brand is Palmers, it does not give you that yucky orange colour, it gives a nice subtle bronze tan. I have also had a spray tan once, years ago for my birthday we were going away to Byron Bay and I did not want to look like a white ghost, lol. SO I got a spray tan, it looked really good I felt like a bronze beauty for a few days, did not have any yucky streaks. In summer I do sometimes sunbake, I am lucky as it does not take me long to tan, as I have Indian in me (half Inidan). When I was younger never had to worry about tanning, I was nearly black lol, always out and about in the sun.
Sorry for my long response, had alot to say on this one.

I don't bother with sunbeds - they don't even appeal to me.
I'm scared of using fake tan and looking awful, so many people leave streaks I'd rather be white then look tangoed lol.
As I live in London most people don't really sport much of a tan in the summmer, as it's not exactly summer lol. I go on holiday to a hot country once a year so I save all my whiteness for then and normally get a tan within the first day of being there so I don't hurt too many peoples eyes lol.

I actually always wait for Summer to get any Color to my skin now, especially since I am Diabetic. I have to watch being in the Sun too long, etc. so I have to be really cautious and careful or it can be dangerous for me.
Back when I was younger due to being so light skinned, it always seemed like I would get burnt first before getting a tan, but I would always do it the real way of laying in the Sun, as I was never much for the tanning beds. And I remember trying the fake Tanning lotion once and looking really orange so I never tried that again.

I get burnt first, but never get the tan! I just go beetroot red and then it goes. Yes the fake tan is rather embarrasing when it goes wrong, I put it on my face once, I looked a right mess.

I live in a hot country where summer lasts between May-September. So there is no need to go sunbathing to be tanned. Sunbathing for a few hours is not bad but one must avoid the hottest hours of the day. It is not that beneficial because of ultraviolet rays.

when I was in my teens I tried out the fake stuff and wow did I look funny I had orange spots all over the place.so no more of that now that I am elderly and have lived here in Ca for years I have acquired a year around tan quite naturally.I sunburn so easily that I cannot stay out in the sun for long periodsof time but do get enough sun that my tan does not fade. I should look into that moisturiser cream as my skin is so dry and I cannot sit in the sun very long and specially if its really hot.
@gemini_rose (16264)

Fake tan stuff is really hard to use. I cannot sit in the sun I hate the idea of it catching me, I have been ill through too much sun a few times and it put me off. The moisturiser is good as it only contains a bit and you use it everyday as a moisturiser and then it slowly adds a natural tan to your skin it looks really nice AND it does not rub off on your clothes which I have had happen before!!

I no longer sun bathe due to health risks and have never used a sun bed. I have used fake tan and ended up with a reasonable result for a day and then it all faded part from my knees which seemed to last for weeks! I have used the body lotion with a int of tanner and agree that is probably the best way to go. However, I do not care about looking tanned anymore, I do not bare my skin outside in the summer as it is too dangerous and so probably will not bother about having a tan at all.
