How old is your email?

United States

Right now I have 343 email messages sitting in my inbox. The last one dates back to August of 2006. I don't know why I hang on to many of them. I just do. Oh sure, I have different files within my email in which I could file them, but I'd probably forget where I filed them or that they were ever there. Do you delete your messages as soon as you get them or do you let them sit in your inbox for a long period of time?

Ive been thinking and i think i may spring clean my inbox this morning!!!!...im not too sure if keeping old mail fills the space up on your computer. That tells you how good i am at computers!!!

I usually delete an email as soon as I have read it, or after I have replied to it. If it is an email I want to keep I put it into a folder marked 'Save'. I will delete some of them from this folder when I not longer need to keep them. I don't like to keep a lot of emails in my inbox. I delete any spam unread and I frequently empty the trash, so I don't have too many emails stored.

I delete all my mylot notifications obviously, but I tend to keep personal emails or those with passwords that I have forgotten or if I want to be reminded of something. I'm afraid if I file them, I'll forget where.

I wasn't on the computer for a couple of months so my email was at 1000 and could not take any more (aol) I have been trying to get it cleaned out and finally got it down to 5 tonight...yee hawww . I hate when I let it get out of hand becsuse I get sometimes over a hundred a day to deal with...I still have tons of filed mail to look at and delete from the last time I got sick... at least now I have a laptop for when I may be out of commission....Good luck and Brightest Blessing, Mari

I'm very sorry to hear you've been ill. I hope thats not something that is ongoing. Sounds like I posted this discussion just at the right time, since you just accomplished that huge feat of getting your email up to date.

Right now I have 45 unread emails out of a total of 69. I go through and get rid of all the ones that I can deal with right there and then and file away all the ones I want to keep. I usually have a few that sit there for a few days before I get around to them (mostly mylot notifications). The last one I have in my inbox dates back to March 13 which is an email from our PTA - our fun fair is coming up next Saturday and there are details in that email that are needed to remind me of what to do when I volunteer that day.

Thats what I do, leave them in my inbox if I think I need to address them later, but then I procrastinate and they stay there forever.

I have over 1000. AOL changed it's mail so that e-mail that's not in a saved folder doesn't drop off after 30 days any more. So Everything that was in my old folder is still there. I try and go back and delete periodically and delete any new ones I want to keep but it's gotten overwhelming! I wish they'd bring the 'old mail' folder back!

I have an aol account too but I never use it. Alot of people have really shied away from using aol because of the changes that they have made.

Do you have a system that automatically purges them after a year, or is it something you personally go through and do yourself?

Some of my emails I delete right away. But there are more that I hang on to. I don't know why but it is I just can't stand to delete them because I might need the information that is contained in the email. I have at least 500 that are older than a month old. Go figure. Maybe in emails I am just as much a packrat as in the physical things in my house.

Each to their own sweety and I have had an inbox older than that in the past and I can't stand it! I lose emails and forget where things are and forget to reply to things! At the moment my inbox is 17 and that is plenty old enough for me - I feel a great sense of achievement when I get it cleared! xxx

It is quite amazing to read that many of you have e-mails dating back so many years! Wow! I get in to my e-mail every day and read/save/delete what I need to. I have some folders saved that I will put a few things into, but that is it. Good luck to all of you trying to get your e-mails cleaned out ;-)

Hi.. My oldest email is dated 2000. Its the year I created my email address. When I receieve emails I deleted those are not important or spam messages that able to get through my inbox. Some messages that are important I transfered or stored them separately in folders for future reference.

I have several email accounts, gmail included. What I love about gmail is the way it sorts out spam, yahoo doesn't do that.

My husband actually makes fun of me, I have emails from years ago. It is kind of like a diary for me. It is fun to go back and read about things that I was disgussing with friends and family from the past. Also my sister in law was killed about 4 years ago, and I still have all the emails that we sent back and forth to each other.

Oh thats really sweet, not that your sister in law was killed, but rather that you save her emails. I would never want to get rid of them either, unless I printed them all out.

My first email is 7 years old. hehehe.. very old now huh. I created it when one of my college instructor asked our email accounts so that he'll send her announcements and other postings there in case he's not going to be around in few days so that when I made my very first email address. hehehe..

I opened my first email account over 10 years ago, but I don't use that account anymore so my emails aren't as old as they could be.

My oldest message from the inbox is dated Wed Nov 07, 2007. I usually delete messages after reading them, but the ones containing important information, I move to a specially designated Folder. I have created a few folders by theme, and I keep my mail there.

I tried doing that for awhile too, filing them under theme, but then I'd forget those that I needed to address at a later date and so left them active in my inbox.

Gee, kbourgerie! Only 343 emails would be a breeze for me. I am up to about twice that many and every time I think I'm making some progress, I get a new flurry of incoming email. I do plan to catch them all up one day, but I don't know how long it will take.

31 Mar 08
Well I'm sure if they ever turn these notifications back on that once more my numbers will be a whole lot higher. These 343 aren't even mylot oriented, they are just personal emails of one kind or another that for some reason I feel I need to save.

my husband, Jim - A photo of my husband Jim.
I have some emails from 2004 that I have saved in old mail. Those with sentimental value; all from my husband. Most of the time I delete messages after I have read them unless it is something I need to flag and follow up on. Have a great day kbourgerie and I hope you are feeling good.

Thanks for responding, but I do want to take this opportunity to give you a little bit of advice. Mylot frowns on just giving one line answers and you won't get much of a payment or feedback for doing so. Its just something to consider in future responses. Good luck and welcome to mylot.
