It's my Treat! Who picks the restaurant?

This subject came up in my family today. My mom will often call and say, "Let's go to Sunrise for dinner, my treat". This is a wonderful family restaurant with home-cooked meals, generous portions and low prices. My husband and I are always thrilled to go and grateful for the invitation. My children, nieces and nephews have no problem asking my mom to take them to a more expensive restaurant instead. I think that this is rude and ungrateful. If it is a special Birthday dinner and you get to pick out the restaurant, that's fine. My question is do you think that it is unmannerly to ask to be taken to a more expensive restaurant when you are not paying for the meal?

To be honest ..no i wouldnt ever ask to choose the restaurant...and if asked for a preference i would say or recommend one that is reasonably priced. Our son usually treats Dad and me to a nice meal...but then we usually go to the same place which is good value..he pays,,i always offer...but he is offended if i pay...

You are a kind and thoughtful parent. It's no wonder that you have a generous son. Thank you for your response.

i completely agree with you. i think the person who is giving treat should chose the restaurant what he/she can afford to. they should not be pushed to take to expensive one. just keep in to the person's shoe and see how it feels.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. Yes, it is true that many people don't think about how the other person feels. You are exactly right!

I think so. Whoever pays or proposes the invitation should be the one to choose the restaurant. Unless they ask where you want to go, the person with the checkbook decides!

Thank you for your response. You feel the same as I do. I was afraid that maybe I was too "old fashioned", but it's nice to get your positive feedback.
