Teenage Son Problems

I have a teenage son and right now lives with my mother back home. He has been living back home for 1 year. He was supposed to move back home with his father but he had problems with his step sister and and now the wife and her kids seem to be coming first before mine. He has started to have a bad attitude and hang with the wrong crowds. He is disrespecting my mother and now my sisters are very upset with him (as well as they should be). I myself I pissed with him and have tryed to get his dad to go and get him and try to talk to him but his father keeps making up excuses, so now I'm at a crossroads. He wants to join the military but is only 17 and a JR in High School (my sister has let me know that he is failing in school and know that he wont graduate next year). He will be 18 in a few months and I and wondering if him getting a GED and joining the military is a good solution for him. He wants to get his Diploma first but I really don't see that happening for a another couple of years with him not really giving a crap about his education right now.
