How often do you trim your dogs nails and what method do you use? Do you clip them yourself, grind them, or do you take them to a groomer? I can't seem to keep my Chihuahua's nails down. They grow like weeds. I have been thinking of buying a grinder but don't know much about them. I am always afraid to clip them myself so I probably don't trim enough off. I usually end up at the groomers after a month. HELP PLEASE...lol

I trim my dogs nails about once a month. We just use regular toe nail clippers. We don't have dog clippers at the moment. I have my husband hold him and I clip them. My dogs nails grow quickly also. He is a Pomeranian. I don't know anything about a grinder either. I suggest clippers or maybe file them.

Yeah. I have never heard of a nail grinder until you just mentioned it to me in this discussion. I will have to look that up also to see how it works and how much it costs. We even cut my dogs hair ourselves to save money. I bought dog cutting shears and it also came with a video to show you how it is done.

My husband is in charge of clipping the bulldog's nails. He just has an average pair of clippers, I'm not totally sure where he got them, but they seem to work good. I've only trimmed them once, which I hated. I was so scared of cutting them too short and hurting them. Bulldogs aren't the most patient dogs so they squirm around a lot. lol Anyway he usually trims them once a month, sometimes more with the older dog. This probably doesn't help much...sorry

The best way to do it is with dog nail clippers. You can get a nice set at wal mart for 5$. I have them and they work very well. I do my dogs every month to keep them under control. Heres how you know if you have cut enough off. Look at the nail. You will see a red line down the middle. This is the quick. Only cut to the top of the red line. Any farther and they will bleed. Which is ok but painfull. Cut them one day and wait a week then cut them again. Waiting a week gives the quick time to go down farther and you can keep them shorter. Do this once a week for a month. And in no time your dogs nails will be under control. Check them once a month there after and trim as needed. Hope this helps you feel more comfortable about doing it your self. Thanks, the problem with clipping them is one dog has all black nails and the other some black nails. That makes it impossible to see the quick...lol I get so nervous and they feel it and won't hold still and it turns into a free for all and I end up going to the groomer...'sigh'

I understand that. My australian shepard has black nails as well. The best way it to just cut off the tip and do it again in a week. If they dont like you doing it you need to get them tired. Take them for a walk or run till they are so tired out they just lay there and allow you to do it. They wont have the energy left to fight you over it and you will be able to do it without feeling like your going to hurt them. It also helps to have someone pet the dog and talk to them while you do it. Thats what I do with mine. Dont get nervous. Just tell your self Im GOING to cut there nails. Get your self into a good state of mind. Be calm about it. Hope this helps. ~May The Kisses Of An Angel Cover And Protect You Always!~ Copper

I already posted once but guess i didn't do it right. I, too, am afraid to trim Hobbs nails by myself. I am so afraid I will hurt her. She is 80 pounds, too. I usually take her into the vets. But they are now 3/4 inches long and NEEDS help. I know it must hurt her to walk on nails so long.

I, too have a problem with my dogs nails. She grows them so fast that it costs me a fortune and I can't bare to cut them myself. So she goes off to the vets for her nail trimming. right now they are about 3/4 inches long and I know that isn't good for her and must hurt when she walks. Any answers about clipping for those who are afraid to clip them for themselves????

I did find this peticure nail grinder. I am going to look around and see if I can find it for a better price and or recomendation. http://www.peticure.com/ peticure is a revolutionary professional grooming tool that completely removes the fear of harming your pet and converts pet parents who were once terrified of the dog nail clippers to be empowered with confidence. When you are confident, your pet will respond with the calmness that we have seen time and time again!

I also found this article... http://groomblog.blogspot.com/2007/12/peticure-tool-disappoints-groomers.html I found it to be worth the read if you are interested in the peticure product. It sounds like they have made some substantial work to make the product better.
