In my opinion, true empathy comes when it is done with human sympathy. I mean, I don't suppose one's way of doling out things without emotional cost is ever worth it. Doesn't sympathy make us human? We become persons exactly by the amount of love, concern, pity or generosity we invest on what we do for others. Empathy is a way to reach out, yes. Respond in a human to those in need, yes. But for it to be devoid of sympathy is I believe lacking. Human compassion for our needy brothers and sisters is what makes our humanity above all else in creation. Love is what defines us, and as a way to show empathy with love, it must be done because of sympathy.

I guess that there is always a price to pay for sympathising with others. I think that there is an even higher price to not sympathising with others, though, huh?

Hi ,
Empathy comes from the sympathy or the emotional attachment we feel for a friend or for a person who has problems. We are not able to solve that but we can atleast listen to that and respond, console the person . The only thing we can do is that and that is what is expected also. When you hear a person narrating a bad experiance you just listen to her / him sympathetically. there lies the empathy you feel for them Don't you think so?
