Have You Ever Shouted Or Waved To Someone Thinking You Knew Them, Only To Find..

That you actually did not know them at all and it was not who you thought it was? I did this today, and I was so mortified! I was going shopping and so I came out of my house with my daughter in her pushchair and my two sons. Further up the road in front of me was a girl who I was friends with and I had not seen her for a while, I shouted to her but thought she was too far away to hear me. So I made the kids walk a bit faster to try to catch her up, still shouting her occasionally. I got just a few yards behind and shouted "Oye are you deaf or something or are you just ignoring me"? at which point she turned around and it was not her. In fact I do not know how I even thought it was! I was so embarrassed that I just wanted the pavement to swallow me whole. I hastily apologised and then speedily shot off with the kids running behind me desperate to get away. They thought it extremely amusing and my eldest boy said "I could have told you it was not her" I said "well why did you not" he said "because you never asked" Oh ha ha very funny, thanks son!

Guilty as charged Rose....ive often done a similar thing, yes you doo feel a darn fool to!!!!...I feel that being of mature years lolol...that they just look at me now,..and think...awwww poor woman..shes lost the plot!! At least that gives me some comfort. But a huge ..i mean..mega huge mistake i made ..was when i saw a girl i vaguely know...she is extremely attractive..but she has had or maybe still has..an illness that affects her mobility...anyway..she was proudly presenting this ere bump...and i was just filled with joy for her!!!!..I congratulated her..well done...how marvellous...and whens baby due??...........Oh im not expecting..im just on a new course of steroids...oh lordy....i have never felt soooo awful!!!!..we laughed together...it was a natural assuption to make...but i tell you what ..its not a mistake i ever want to make again!!!!

I'm sorry and embarrassed to say it, but yes,I have! I wanted the earth to swallow me up too, when they said, "Do I know you?" I've done it a few times, actually, and people have come up to me and started talking. I've talked back, and they've said, "You don't remember me, do you?" I've thought, no, not really, but what can you say? "Yes, of course, I do." Then, I've had to quickly wrack my brain to remember who they are, but nine times out of ten, they talk about something that jolts your memory and you come out of it ok. Great discussion my friend. It gave me a good laugh... don't you just love kids, too! The way they're always there to help you out? ha ha ha. Brightest Blessings.

Lol... you got it! Sometimes it's somebody you haven't seen for ages, and they've changed slightly. I guess your kids thought there might be another person with that name... either that, or they were chuckling under their breath all the time! ha ha ha

Oh my goodness, the you don't remember me do you one! I have had that so many times, I am terrible at remembering people and they must see it in my face when they are talking to me, that I have not got a clue who they are! Oh kids are great for leaving you to squirm, he must have gained great satisfaction out of watching me yell down a busy road to a friend who actually was not a friend at all!!

it's funny you started this post. just the other day i am on the train. and this woman sits next to me and she looked just like a good girlfriend of mine. so being me, i nudged her and said " excuse me miss!!" kind nasty like because she is a bit of a hot head and i wanted to mess with her. so the woman turns to me and says " oh i am so so sorry, please forgive me." i looked at her and said "OMG i am so sorry, I thought you were someone i knew, please forgive me." i felt so bad!! but then LOL when i got off the train

yes I have it was a few years ago and I had gone to the library with my hubby. It had been a dreadful day at work and I was tired anyway I went to choose my books and by hubby also went on his own to get his. I had got my books and I saw my hubby the other side of the room so I went over and put my arm through his and said are you ready to go. Imagine my horror to look up into the face of a complete stranger who looked horrified. He had the same jacket on as my hubby and I really did not look at the face. I felt so embarassed

I go there every month and still do. Perhaps the chap in question never went there again as I have never seen him there since, perhaps a good job

Oh no! Ok...first let me tell you not to be too embarrassed because there is probably not an adult on Earth whom that hasn't happened to! And, while it is embarrassing, I am sure that she have had herself a giggle first but then remembered the time when she did that a year ago or so. And, think of it this way...you may have brought a smile to her face and a giggle which may have brightened her day today. That is never a bad thing! Now, as for myself...I have never done that! Nope! Just kidding! I have done that! I can't remember a specific instance though which should comfort you as you will likely forget this instance...or at least, only vaguely remember that it happened but, forget most of the details! LOL! So, in time, it will become a distant memory. So, no worries! You are not the only one! But, you may consider trying a practical joke on your little jokester of a son today...especially since it is April Fool's day!

I waved down a car that I thought was my daughter's only a block from her house. They stopped and I walked up to it and found out it wasn't her. I had picked up 2 kittens for her and had them in a box in my hands. The driver of the car was laughing but did want to see the kittens.

I wasn't cringing in shame. I don't get embarrased as much as I used to. I guess getting older helps.

Ah but you see I have always been the type to persevere and so I asked for it, where was my gut instinct when I needed it, it should have been there saying do you not think it is strange that she has not turned around. Well actually it should have been my son saying no mummy stop it is not your friend. But no both gut and son just let me get on with making a total fool of myself! Oh well, not to worry.

I have tried this once. I really thought the person I saw was my cousin whom I have never seen for so long. I waved and called him by his name. Unfortunately, the man looked at me and then, I realized it was not him. The man looked weird and annoyed. That's why I apologized right away and said that I thought he was someone I know.

I have actually done that before and you talk about embarrassing that is the most embarrassng thing that you will ever have to go through because then that person just looks at you like what are you doing and what are you talking about...and then you feel like you are really losing your mind for waving and yelling at someone that you didn't know...I think that everyone has done that at some point in their lives and if they haven't they will before their life is over because that is just like a normal part of life....making mistakes...but trust me I know how embarrassing that can be... Oh YES! I HAVE done this. My kids reacted the same way.. AFTER I embarrassed myself, My smart@ss son said the same words to me. I wanted to strangle him. But this person was extremely nice, she told me she has "one of those faces, then proceded to introduce herself so we wouldn't be "strangers" I thought it was a nice thing for her to do. I have never seen her again

LOL...I have done this also. It is very embarassing. One time I was shopping and grabbed a kid by the arm thinking it was my son. He looked just like my son from behind. Now that was embarassing to say the least. I wanted to crawl out of the store.

you have just reminded me of what I did the other day, I was in a shop with my daughter and 2 sons, I thought my son was stood next to me and so was talking away to him, when he did not answer me, I told him that if he was going to be ignorant and not answer me then I would not buy him any sweets!! I then looked at him only to realise it was not my son! They had gone off to look at the toys, I have never actually grabbed one though now then I would want the floor to swallow me. Its funny how when you are out all kids seem to look and sound the same and if I hear a kid shout mum, I always answer them even when they are not mine, I get some funny looks I can tell you!! Thanks for making me laugh though

Oh gosh yes, I'm going red thinking about it. Why do we do it to ourselves? And it is usually when you are so sure it is someone you know when in fact you don't know them and the times when you are not so sure so you don't do anything and it was someone you know! Oh LOL, kids! I really feel for you. You just can't run away fast enough, can you? And then of course you bump into them again not long afterwards and they are probably thinking - there goes that mad woman again. All you want is that the ground opens up and you just fall in and get away from the embarrassing moment(s).
@gemini_rose (16264)
1 Apr 08
Yep you just summed it all up in a nutshell he he. I could not get away fast enough because I had a pushchair!!
31 Mar 08
oh dont worry this happens to me alot just last week i thought its was my cousin i started waving like mad and whe i got closer it wasnt him so as the man got closer i just carried on waving like i was actually waving to someone else...oh the shame....but i gotta admit i was laughing about it and it was a great story to tell my cousin..x

Oh my Buddha! You just reminded me of that time when was smiling at someone and was wondering why the person was not smiling back. As I approach nearer I was horrified to see a different person. I didn't know what to say but I just pretended that I was smiling a friendly smile only.

I think everyone has probably done that at least once. There's nothing to be embarrassed about, it's just a simple mistaken identity. Smile, laugh and move on!

Yeah!I also had been in the same situation as you did, it was really embarrassed.I even pat her shoulder, but just when I open my mouth and say "hello" to her,It was turned out that I made a mistake! It was not her at all!even now,I also wonder that why I can make mistake like that, she is one of my best friends! The person I made a mistake looked like her so much at that time, but after I know she was not my friend,I can not find any similarity between them. How odd?

i did a lot worsts than waving to that person. I thought he was my friend way back in highschool. I wave at him but he didn't wave back.. I figured that he doesn't remember me... I went straight to him and told him " Hello there, hows your mom?!"... awww... then just looking closer at that man... he is not the one... lolz... I apologized and walked away... well.. he just shrugged and smile. lolz. So embrassing!
