My dog has horrible seperation anxiety. He crys everytime we leave the house. He makes all the nieghbors mad. I don't know what to do. We have tried pills and everything. How can I stop him from crying when I am not home?

There are some things you can try and see if they help you. 1. When you return from being gone don't make a big deal when you see him or her. I know it will be hard to ignore her or him at first, but it should help with the anxiety. 2. Leave a shirt that you have slept in with him when you leave. 3. You can also try doing this, put your coat on and grab your keys, then sit down, let him get used to that. Then, do the same and open the door, sit back down, let him get used to that. Then the next time, say I will be back soon, leave the house and leave the door open, let him get used to that, etc....you get the idea, try this then keep doing it a little longer, for 1 minute, then close the door and do it all again. The longer you do it and keep associating it with I will be back soon, he will know what that means. Good Luck

Another way to do it, is to tell him to stay... use sit and stay, before you go out the door, and well he'll get used to staying quietly.. and usually all asleep. I do this with my dogs when I am able to.. However my dogs got to smart for their own good so now we have problem of trying to keep them fenced or leashed so they run along the vehicles up till the edge of our yard when I leave, or they follow me all over the place up and down the road. We tried everything with this, They even learned to climb trees to figure out how to get up the tree to me lol... Persistent. Good thing I do not leave very often, so people do not have to worry about my dogs going nuts... - DNatureofDTrain
