Do You know your Child?

I was reading a study that showed that after the age of four most parents don't really know their kid. I wonder why parents would stop listening or spending time with thier kids. Is it that now the kid can talk and fully fuction that they feel they don't need them as much or what. This was really disturbing to me that so many parents are like this. No matter how old a child gets parents should never pu their gaurd down. When do you feel that kids can be independant and the parents can sit back and relaxe?
