I do not know if anyone has noticed a picture up top in the political discussion page that read Power to the People, Obama 08. I must say that statment is idiotic. To say that a politican can give power to the people while growing the size of government is impossible. The right of the individual, and the right of the collective i.e government, will always be opposed. Whenever government grows, no matter where, the individual's right srinks. Obama has made it clear for everyone to hear that he sides with the collective opposed to the individual. So my question is this: If you believe that we need to give the power back to the people then how does voting for Obama accomplish this. I do wish that whoever posted the picture would defend it.

In case no one is aware of it, POWER TO THE PEOPLE is a Black Activist slogan dating back to the '60's.
That has nothing to do with giving power to the people from government and has everything to do with giving the power to the Black Community, which ties in really well with the message that Rev. Wright and the Black Muslim Activist groups represent.
I believe the term is now Afro-Centric or some variation of that.
There are reasons that foreigners should stay out of American politics, because they don't know our history and they don't understand it, us, or what the issues are.

So true about foreigners. If people that hate America support Obama then why should I support Obama. I wonder if I would post a picture with Hillary saying power to the man, I wonder what the responses would be. Oh wait power to the woman, McCain would be power to the man.

Ouch ouch ouch.. A lot of xenophobia stirring up. I've been able to gather from your past posts that you're both conservatives? Unfortunately, that's what people hate about the conservative party, xenophobia is often present.
Clumping all foreigners together as hateful and uneducated is being a bigot.
It's pretty funny you bring out that Black Activist slogan considering that fact that liberals are often the ones stereotyped as being too obsessed with race. Unfortunately for your small theory, 'power to the people' is also very common in other things. Not only a Black Panthers slogan.

Or is Wikipedia too liberal for your likings? ;)

So you're just going to turn away from factual evidence? Alright, that's fine with me. Wikipedia has always been a source that's been able to present data in a concise manner and usually puts warnings when neutrality or incorrect data may be present. I don't see why people would lie about the origins of the phrase; "Power to People."
But let's say it is solely a Black Panthers slogan. I'm pretty sure this was made by one of his supporters, not Obama's campaign. So your opinions lead to no new information about the man.
I lived 5 years in the United States, I believe I have the right to care about the political status. See, that's what's great about an open minds, they seek new knowledge at all times. Even if it doesn't directly concern them.

It's just a load of crap like everything else politicians say. People think that if a law they want gets passed, then the politician who proposed it is giving power to the people. The people are irrelevant, it's the special interest groups that paid off the politician to propose and back it. More government control will always mean less power to the people. The government bans smoking in restaurants, that means people no longer have the power to smoke where they want. People who hate smoking, feel they now have more power even though it's all in the government's hands. It's all a matter of perspective.

It could end sooner than you think. In California they passed a law 6 years ago that allowed you to call the police and have your neighbor fined if you felt smoke from their home was annoying you. I'm not kidding. The law fell under the same type of guidelines as your neighbor playing their stereo too loud. I hate smoking and all that, but I can't imagine a neighbor smoking so much that it could ever affect the inside of my home. I think some people are just taking one step at a time towards making smoking illegal.

To see how big government works look at Social Security. Sold to us as a way to fund your retirement. Pay into the system and when you retire the money will be there. The politicans saw this pot of new money coming in and wrote out IOU for it and spent the money. Now they need money to fund the program and the answer is to rais the tax you working people pay. (no SS tax is paid by trust fund babies or Elected Officals) The highway trust fund is another example. The gas tax was imposed to build highways and maintain them. As the tax money came in and there was more than was needed the answer find more projects - so mass transit is funded and people in large cities get cheep public transportation and the people in the rural areas are paying for it. When the government overtaxed the driving public and used the money to fund other non highway projects no one complained so now the have to raise the gas tax to maintain the roads.
This is what big government leads to. The question is who should decide how you spend your money? You or the Government?

I'm the one who put it up because, to be honest, I found it visually appealing. However, as to the phrase on it, it's not to be taken too literally. Of course, it's not saying "give [governmental] power to the people." It's more of a way to say that we the people, as a whole, are the most important and should try sharing our ideas. At least, that's how I interpreted it.

I am surpised that you finaly showed up. I know that you were the one that put up the picture, I noticed you name below. I do not understand what you mean be saying Power to the People Obama 08 can be interpreted as that we the people are most important and should try sharing our ideas. If you want Obama so bad take him, make him you King or Prime ministry.

Well, 'power to the people' as in 'importance attributed to the people.' That's how I saw it. Seeing that as a literal statement is a bit silly, to me. Of course voting for Obama will not give governmental power to the population.
As for your last statement, I feel a bit of rage boiling inside of you. Fortunately for you, I'm not of age or nationality to vote for Obama.

I'm not sure that it can be defended. Especially after reading your post. You make your points most ellequently, logically, and I believe, correctly. It goes back to the old ontological question of the needs of the many vs. the needs of the few, or the one. You are absolutely correct. But Obama isn't the only candidate advocating for bigger governmental roles; Clinton and McCain are as well. The ONLY Candidate that I know of that isn't is Ron Paul, but then he's still basically a Libertarian at heart too.

Your are right that Obama is not the only one that will expand the size and role of government. Ron Paul is the only candidate that would srink governemnt. The only reason for using Obama is that picture, I could have used Clinton, McCain, Bush, or most of the elected office holders.

There are two things that give me hope about Senator McCain, he has said he would veto bills with pork in them. Since he has never used ear marks he knows what pork is and I hope he vetoes the bills. The other thing is he said he would appoint conservative judges. Senator Clinton and Obama will appoint extremely liberal judges and spending will set new records for spending and taxes.
