Reading is fun, too

I see a lot of discussions trying to encourage people to read, but it seems all of them forget one thing - how much fun reading can be. Don't get me wrong. All the enriching, learning, improving your mind and other benefits are wonderful, but if that's all you say about an activity, doesn't that make reading sound stuffy and boring? I'm talking about reading in your free time, when you should be able to enjoy what you're doing. Especially kids. My mom turned me into a reader when I was very young, and she never told me how much my vocabulary would improve or what I'd learn. She'd simply give me books that she had loved as a kid and told me that I'd love them and the characters in them - and I did. And, I've never stopped. Don't people read for pure pleasure anymore?

No. I guess they don't. My sister would read when she was young. Me, I didn't. I prefered playing outside with my friends.I didn't get into reading until I was in my teens . How? My teacher told my mom I needed to improve my reading and the best way is to let me read what I liked. My mom agreed so I got to read Harold Robbins and Jacqueline Suzann and Sidney Sheldon. It wasn't Shakespeare but it was what I wanted to read. I read more and got better.Trying to get me to read what You wanted me to read wouldn't make me read , even when I was young. What makes it really fun is reading what you want to read.

I agree with your teacher. The more you do things, the better you get, and you do more when you actually like what you're doing.

Thanks for the best response. I was lucky. I had good teachers and a great mom.

I'm sure the cats think they're much more entertaining than a book;) Softer, too.

Sure, some reading isn't for pleasure. But, you're right that a lot of learning comes when you are doing it for fun. Sometimes a book I've picked up just because it looked like a good story talked about something that got me curious, and the next thing I know, I'm hunting down all the information I can find. And, the main goal is still having fun - only this time, the fun comes from satisfying my curiosity. And, I'm learning in the process.

i love to read just to read. I don't get into the books where you actually have to sit there and analyze every single thing. i love to read just for the pleasure of reading. that's my relaxation. God bless

Thank you. I always wonder if some people read just because they're supposed to, not because they really want to do it. Reading is my relaxation, too.

I love books. I don't know who started it in my family but ever since I was a kid, I've always been surrounded by tons of books. My big sisters read romance novels, my brothers adventure books and my dad political ones. I remembered spending most of my free time reading these books rather than watching TV. You can get so caught up in a story sometimes that you'd never want to put the book down.
I didn't care if I learned anything or enriched my vocabulary or whatever..I just wanted to know what happens to the protagonist in the story. That's probably why my eyes got broken. Even at night, when my dad would tell me that it's lights out, I would still read my book under the covers with a flashlight in hand. These days, I still read, but mostly online stuff or ebooks. It's a fun way to pass the time. My friends would sometimes get pissed off cos I'd ditch them to read.

Yeah, my eyes are bad too. In my family, everyone but my brother reads books and magazines.

I agree with you, angelwriter, reading is fun. I am a avid reader, sometimes I have two books going at one time. I am also into the book on tapes. They are great to have if you are on a road trip; they are much better to have than to be on the cellphone while driving.I get very absorbed when I am reading a good book. Some people don't know what they are missing because they never learned to love reading.

Reading should always be for pleasure. It can be a very fun thing to do and a nice way to relax. When it stops being fun, then it becomes work and it is work that you don't get paid for. Therefore, I only read what I enjoy and on my own time. I think that a lot of people are going to dislike reading because of it seeming like work. Which is bad, as reading can be one of the funniest things in existence.
