knowing the price of rice- a staple food in most of the countries in asia may not be as interesting as other topics for other people here in my lot. but i do think that for us, who are eating rice, this is an informative discussion.
here the philippines, the price of rice is going up steadily. there even has a news that we have a shortage of rice supply. the result? the producers are marking the prices up. the government has said that they have plans to subsidize this, but we still have to wait and see.
i think it the price is about 40-50pesos per kilo.

The current price of rice here in the Philippines ranges from Php25.00 (USD0.62) to Php40.00 (USD 1.00). But, it is quite alarming. Just this morning I saw in the news that there's a speculation that prices of rice will go as Php 70.00 per kilo or about USD 1.75 in the coming months. It will be so much burden for those who really can't afford to cope up with the rising prices of all commodities. Though the government is selling NFA rice at only Php 18.25 per kilo or about USD 0.45 per kilo, they allow only 2 kilos per customer in the city and only a half kilo in the provinces. I hope the people in the authority should address this global issue so that we can all survive this crisis in rice supply.

oh wow, reading your reply it just occurred to me that a rice shortage has the potential of becoming as bad as or even worse than, because of the wide spread effect, the Irish Potato Famine!
rice is such an essential staple around the world.

In china, government pays more attention to rice supply than before in year 2008.as you said,to control the rice price is the key to control inflation.common people like us are price unelasticity to basic food such as rice.

I just don't eat that much rice, potatos and pasta are my starchs of choice. Rice once in a while is fine, but I'm not a big rice eater, even tho the river that runs thru town is saved in the "highland" lakes to water rice fields down at the coast.

It's been a very long time since I shopped for rice, but I think it's still cheap, less than $1 a pound. But, it depends on how you buy it. It can probably be less than 60 cents a pound if you buy it from the bulk bin. It costs more if you buy it pre-packaged. I remember when I could get it for 30 cents a pound. Beans are also cheap, but it depends on where and how you buy those, too. Rice and Beans is a very common staple where I live, near the U.S./Mexican Border.

the last time I purchased rice it was a 20 pound bag of long grain white rice for $10 - so 50cents a pound. Which 50 cents a pound is normal for long grain white rice when you buy a 1 or 2 pound bag - but when buying a large 20 pound sack it is usually less expensive than that - I previously was paying under $7 for 20 pounds of jasmine rice.
Brown rice is my favorite and it is going for about 80cents a pound :(

i live in the philippines. we also have a rice shortgae so the price of it is soaring high. a kilo of rice here is priced at twenty five to a high of 50 pesos per kilo. one dollar is equivalent to forty one philippine peso. you do the math. the price is really high because what we gt at twenty five pesos being the cheapest, is not really good.

You can buy a 1 lb bag of plain long grain white rice for $1.19 here...if you get it premade or in a flavored mix it is something like $3 a pound. I have no idea what that would exchange to be though!

Yep, the price of the rice in my country, Malaysia does increase recently and the ordinary one is around USD1.60 per kilo. Rice sold here is normally in pack of 5 kg, 10kg and 20kg. Rice of better grade of course will be more expensive. I usually buy the 5 kg pack which could last for two months or so for a family of four.
