Why are men 'expected' to pay for women?

April 2, 2008 4:56am CST
I was thinking about this the other day, i know its sort of a courtisy thing, but with all the new women should be treated the same as men, and vice-versa. Why are men still 'expected' to pay for women when they go out together on a data? Is it just me that thinks this? Or does it not go on where you live anymore? Chris

I think I am right in saying that most men even in the 21st Century still feel very uncomfortable if their lady friend pays for the bill, it's the macho image, the masculinity which may be under threat if the woman pays, it makes them feel inferior and they like to take the leading role and still see themselves as the supporter, the provider, I guess that will never change and yes it still goes on my friend, fact of life and I think also that most women prefer it this way!

if you are dating a woman's lib woman you are not expected to and they won't let you, not all men pay anymore either, some will tell you we are going dutch, meaning each pays there on way. It is not expected anymore, but it sure is nice if they do.

I think part of it is because usually it's the man that asks a woman out on the date. Also, some guys feel embarassed if they don't pay, or insist on doing so. I was always broke when I was dating so I wouldn't argue against a guy paying if he brought it up! I think it depends on the man, most of the men I dated had old school parents or their parents were immigrants here so it was a culture thing.

Hello dear chris. I do not have exact idea, but I think that it is just a habit that men are expected to pay for women in most cases, but it is not always like that, because things or situations may vary.

Thanks for the reply, thats sort of what i thought, because in the olden times, thats how it used to be, it just sort of got passed down to the current day. But, yeah, things now are different. Thanks, Chris
