are tradition and modernization incompatible????

well, it is really a big topic. in fact, I cast doubt whether there exist a confirmed definition for either tradition or modernization that beyond theoretics. what remaind me of this philosophical problem is the reconstruction of many houses in my community under the name--- too outmoded, and should give place to modern architecture. but I thought them are beautiful , although not in the fashion style . are there somebody give me some clues to delve into the relationship of tradition and modernization????? is it really necessary to put one against another?????
