Driving in the US

April 2, 2008 9:12am CST
I am going to the US this summer, initially staying with a friend in Nebraska, before moving onto the likes of Colorado. I have a couple of questions about car hire/insurance: a) I am 19, so unsure as to whether I could hire a car in either NE or CO. b) Would I be able to get insured on my friend's car? (she is a US citizen) Thanks. Any help much appreciated! P.S. Any other tips about travelling in this area would be helpful :)

Not every state recogonizes the International Drivers License so that may also be a problem. I also beleive that you have to be 21 to rent the car and they charge almost double if you are under 25 years of age. I would guess that if you could rent a car you would be paying over $500 for a small car.

I used to work for a car rental company and I am sorry to say that many rental companies won't rent to anyone under 25. You may be able to find some small rental companies that might rent to younger people, but most won't. If you do find one, you might have to purchased the extra insurance they offer, which is expensive. You might be able to drive your friends car depending on your insurance company. I would check with them while you are still at home and see if they cover you when you are abroad. Good Luck!
