I love to decorate my fruit basket with lots of different fruits and keep it in the dining table. But since its summer time, the aroma of fruits brings in lots of insects with them.Mom suggests I store them in the fridge, and take them out few minutes before I eat them. What happens to the fruits that you buy. Do they go straight to the fridge or where?

Most of the fruits I buy (apples, oranges, strawberries, grapes) go into the fridge. Bananas however, I don't put in the fridge because they'll brown faster. Since our house seems to spawn fruit flies around old bananas very quickly, I keep them in an old cake container. It was the plastic tray and cover that came with a cake from the grocery store. For you, since you like the aroma, I would try to studding an apple or orange with whole cloves. It still smells good and from what I understand cloves repel bugs. You can also try using some sort of screen, but it would have to be a very fine mesh to keep out teeny little fruit flies.

I had never heard of the cloves solution - I might give that a try myself - though I will not stud the fruits as that might excel rippening too fast - perhaps if I just keep some whole cloves in with the bowl or bag of fruit it may have the desired affect as well. I like the mesh idea, but those little buggers will probably still find a way in. Bananas are the worst culprits as the eggs for the fruit flies are in the peel of the banana already.... try this with the kids - put a banana in a glass jar with lid - watch the fruit flies appear as though from thin air....

Just to clarify, I didn't mean stud all your fruit. Just one apple or orange should do it.

depends on the season for us, and the type of fruit. bananas never get stored in the fridge unless I want to make a banana bread with them, then the discoloration does not matter much. apples I generally keep outside the fridge. during the cold months I keep it all stored on the table or countertop. during the warm months I sometimes get carried away with buying fruits in season - but fridge space is limited, so I utilize the cooler to keep them fresh - and keep bugs at bay. fruit flies like our onions too, which I find odd - so onions have to go in the fridge bin in the summer :(

Unfortunately in the summer time they will usually have to go right in the fridge, because once those fruit flies come in they are hard to get rid of.
