Is it Wrong to Be Here For The Money?

United States

I'm not talking about the post counters, the ones that are simply here for the money, and never seem to last long. I'm talking about people like me, who respond to discussions with thoughtful insight, and great information. People who start discussions only when they have something deep on their mind. I am here for the whole of MyLot. Not just the friends or information, but for the money too! Its the reason I joined MyLot. I love meeting new people, learning new things, writing, and getting paid to do all that is an added bonus. I have started a few discussions recently about earnings here in MyLot, because that is one of the purposes that I am here. But some responded to the discussion that they were not here for the money, only the experience. Is it wrong that I want to do my best, not only to get information out, but to earn as much as I can as well? I feel that people such as myself really get the most out of MyLot. They are finding new friends, learning about new experiences, and increasing their earnings as well. Is it nobler to be here just for the friends and discussions? Am I wrong for being here to earn as well? Let me know MyLot.

Nope, I don't mind earning a little as well. It's the people who continually post stupid %^*& ( self edit there ) just to make money that aren't worth responding to. If they don't have something beneficial to add to a conversation they shouldn't put their 2 cents in just hoping to get a penny.

Some of my responses might be a bit short but at least their somewhat insightful. You shouldn't just post " I agree " , say a little more at least.

Not only is it stupid and a time waster to just respond "I agree" to a discussion, its against mylot rules. Says right in the do's and don'ts of the TOS not to respond with one-liners like that. And why would someone want to, besides boosting their post count? What value does that add?

These people get on my nerves. Those that post just to say they agree, or post discussions of nonsensical questions just to raise their earnings. The great part about it is, they never last very long. Too many of their posts get deleted, they don't make too much money, they get discouraged and quit. Maybe one day they will either get the message and post something of substance, or they will just quit joining. I know its wishful thinking, neither will happen realistically. But I never post a discussion unless its something that I can write more than a few lines about and get the reader involved. And I never respond to a discussion unless I am truly interested in it, and can write four lines of type about it.

No I don't think it's wrong to be here for the money as this is a earning site. But mylot does offer more than that, and I think many of us don't realise that until we have been here for quite some time. I joined mylot initially for the money. That's it, no-one referred me as I was looking for money to earn online while at home as a homemaker. I stumbled across mylot and voila, have remained ever since. Yes the small amount of $$ was the incentive but as I began to reply to discussions, post a few of my own, got to meet a few people and makes some friends, as well as learning new things on the way, I thought wow, this is a site I can really stick to regardless of how much I might or might not earn. I also think others joined for the company and not so much for the money too. Maybe friends referred them, they interacted through different discussions and continued to remain here as a social networking site and the $$ is an extra bonus.

It does take a while for the real value of this site to sink in. Some are so ignorant that they never see it, that's why people end up quitting. I joined because of the money, granted. But my second reason is that I love to read. Read about others lives, read about other countries. I felt that I would not only be able to get paid here, but I would get some good information that I wouldn't be able to get anywhere else. As I stayed here, I realized another valuable point of this site. By being a member, I have at my fingertips a world of people that I can relay my problems to, whether in life, work, kids, anything that isn't against the TOS really, and get answers. That alone is more valuable to me than any payout MyLot could give me. I look at the payout as an added bonus, and a measure to my participation. I get all this resource for free, and when I give back to that resource to help others, they pay me to do so. That is wonderful.

I am not here for money, but if I want to get referrals for some of my other websites, I don't see a problem with it, I have been here 2 yrs, and I enjoy being here. You have nice people and you have not so nice people. Most of my friends try to help me out, as well as I try to help them out. You won't earn much here, this is just as Nice community most of the time. Good information, advice, Humor sometimes Insults. But I kind of look over that. We can still be friends if you want if not that is cool too! I try to get along with everyone. That is the kind of person I am. Have a good day!

I am the same way. I love people and try to get along with everyone. But I will tell a person when they have done something to me that I don't like. That is why we ran into the problems we did yesterday. I will add you as a friend as soon as I finish this post, but in the meantime read this discussion I started: http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1460371.aspx Most people would have gone to the extreme action right away, as a few people have said in this discussion. I am a person that likes to give people chances instead of taking action right away.

I just caught the beginning of your post (told you I am slow) The problem isn't in getting referrals from MyLot. You just have to go about it the right way.

There is nothing wrong with being here for the entire MyLot experience which ALSO INCLUDES THE MONEY!!! If money was the ONLY reason, that would not be right, but if money is the bonus that gets you here, that's NOT a problem. We can always use money. Money is what keeps MyLot competitie. If you had a choice between MyLot and an IDENTICAL SITE that did NOT pay, which would you chose? I would personally chose MYLOT because it has the whole package AND MORE.

You are exactly right. The way you explained it its like the difference between donating blood and donating plasma (which comes out of the blood) If you go to the blood bank, you will get a cookie and some juice, maybe a prize if they are holding a promotion. But if you go to the plasma center, you get paid for them to take the blood, separate the plasma, and put the blood back. I will go to the plasma center everytime!!!

I do not feel you are here for any of the wrong reasons. We all have our own reasons for doing what we do.I feel that no one should judge us for them.I learn from MyLot discussions, and from my friend's discussions.MyLot is a great place to enter act in.I say keep up the good work.

Unfortunately, as in life, we have so many people here that judgement is bound to come from somewhere. I kinda forgot that when I made this post. I was just angry that some people actually look down on others because they are here for the money. So, knowing me, I had to put it out in public.

Everyone is here for many reasons... I don't think everyone would have joined originally were it not for the money aspect. But the feelings change, friends are made, relationships grow... that doesn't mean that continuing to make money is wrong. 'Noble' is easy to talk about, and hard to do... I hope my friends here make LOTS of money!

I hope that you do too Alamode. I joined initially for the money, but also to have a community to speak to and get feedback from. I must say in the fourteen months that I have been here, my views have changed. I am here for that community first, and the money second. But it does cheer me up when I have a particularly good posting day that's reflected in my earnings. Not only is it a cash bonus, but it shows me that my writing consistency is improving, and that I am drawing more people to my writing. That is the real bonus here.

There's nothing wrong with getting money for things you enjoy doing. In fact, that's the ideal situation: to love the activity that helps to butter your bread. Think of it this way: Even Rev. Billy Graham draws a paycheck. In the New Testament, even the earliest Christians who went out to minister and spread the Good News about Jesus were encouraged to accept some sort of pay in return for their speaking engagements and/or fulltime ministry. There are a lot of service-oriented jobs (e.g. teacher, minister, social worker, police officer, nurse, doctor, child-care provider--AND writer!). You don't see any of those other service-oriented workers turning down pay or feeling funny about accepting it, so you shouldn't either. Writing is our job just as much as the person on a GM assembly line somewhere has a job. We all need the money, and this is fun and honest work!

AJ, you are so right. In today's society, without money, you might as well cease to exist. Without money, you are in the homeless shelter, eating donated food, and making sure your possessions don't get stolen, if you have any.

No, nothing wrong about earning .... if we don't like we can leave, and it will be very good too when we also get and expect friendship, idea, partner etc. Only it will not be proportional if we expect $100 each day from mylot .....

Right, $100 a day, I wish!!! I wouldn't even get up from the computer if it was possible to earn that much in one day. Maybe if you got a million active referrals, but when is that going to happen?

I appreciate your views. I am also to share my views with my friends. I wish to interact with like minded people, irrespective of their numbers. It is always a great fun exchanging thoughts with other friends here. I have learnt a lot, since I joined Mylot. I have made many good friends here, who has become dear to me, more than my real life friends. I have gained some new experiences here, which I would not have got, had I not joined this site. Earning money is secondary for me and I do not reply to discussions or start new discussions, for the sake of it.

That is great that you are here for the experience first and the money second. That is the way I am. When you start posting to discussions just for the sake of getting that little bit of change, it brings down the quality of MyLot.

Unfortunately, your belief is not true. I would have never started this discussion if everyone respected my reason. There are some childish people here in Mylot too. Once they find out that you don't share their views, they will follow you, rate every discussion or response you give negative, and as soon as you step out of line, they are the first to report you. Even still, these people won't keep me from being on this site, nor will the force me to edit my thoughts to conform to theirs. MyLot is supposed to be about different opinions, and as long as I am here, and it fits within MyLot's guidelines, I'm going to post it!!!

No, holy no! Lol All of us are here at myLot for a purpose or a hybrid of purposes. Money is just one reason. If it is wrong to get money when you are here, then everyone will opt out of getting money! Though there is no such option right now (such as donating to charity), one can simply opt out literally by letting the money sit and not withdrawing it ever.

Maybe that is the next issue we should bring up to Crash, making a donation button. There are a few people that say they don't do anything with their earnings from MyLot, even if they do reach payout. This money could be helping someone somewhere.

I dont think that it is bad that you are on this site to earn extra money. In fact I think that 99.9% of the people on this site were referred here under the pretences that they were going to be able to earn extra money each month. And your posts are great. The people that really get to me are the ones that post 1,000 times a day about nothing. Things like "Do you like apples" and for some reason there are 100 responces from people who eaither do or dont like apples. I think that if you are on this site to meet people. And really enjoy the mylot experience then there is absolutly nothing wrong with being honest about the fact that you enjoy that mylot pays its members.

Here we go with the post counters again. They irk my nerves as well with their posts of no value. They never learn, but then again, most of them never earn, so they don't stick around long enough to learn.

Yeah, that always bothers me. It is one of the things you don't find nearly as much of on unpaid sites: the "fluff" topics that nobody really cared about. I couldn't care less if you feel tired in the morning or at night, or if you prefer chocolate cake to vanilla. Instead, i'd rather have a real exchange of information.

My Great-great-Grandmother used to tell a joke that is perfect in this situation. A husband and wife were walking beside a river. After walking a little way, the husband missteps, and falls into the river, he can't swim. As he is thrashing about, the wife runs up to the bank and spits into the water. She then says, every little bit helps!!!

I joined and started particapating here for the money. I have three children and every single penny counts. I found though that the community here is alot different than alot of networking sites out there. I can really get to know what others are thinking and feeling. I don't have to worry about some sick freak asking me to cyber with him. I can learn about something, I know very little about, and share knowledge of things I know about. But not only that, it is a place where I can share my beliefs with others, and in return share in their beliefs. A place that I can use as an outlet, to complain, or rejoice, or just say what ever is on my mind. I too, am about the quality of my responses not the quanity of them. People who think they can make lots of money for nothing are fooling themselves. This is not hard, just time cosuming, and shoot, how many wasted hours do people spend doing just this, and for free. Who is the stupid ones there???

You hit the nail right on the head Avon. I tell so many people here that say they can't earn good, or that no one can earn anything decent here, that it is doable, and its simple to do, not easy, but simple. Stick to your interests, add friends that share your interest, post discussions/responses that are at least four lines, comment on your responses, rate your responses. This will boost your earnings. It is work, but if you like the site, it doesn't seem like it. And isn't it so great that we get paid for something we like doing?

You are right they won't stay long. They never do. When people are here just for the money, nine times out of ten they don't want to do the work that is involved to get that money. It takes time and work to get to that level, simple, but not easy. Those that are here for the money usually end up doing a slew of discussions that are nonsensical or really short, respond to discussions with one-liners that don't add anything to the discussion, and when they see that isn't really bringing their earnings up, they quit.

by the looks of your response you know that the answer to your question is NO..you are a good example for everyone to follow. i like your post(s_:) and you seem to bring out a lot of good questions. the reason for any education is to stimulate thought. i think you are very thought provoking and if you just happen to make something on the side it is all from the fruit of your labor. love of money is the root of all evil but we still need the filthy lucre (I Tim. 3:3)..it is all good there was a poem..and i learned it in school..and i will further research this later..but it goes "I bargained life for a penny and life would pay no more"..well that is the start of the poem..but in the end it says "what to my dismay! whatever wages I would have ask ..life would have glady paid..but first you have to ask and then you bare the task?" well, this is not 100% but you get the drift..Have fun first, seek ye the Kingdom of God..for God loves a joyful giver...if you find Joy in your work you will never work another day in your life...*PEACE_)*

I remember that poem. I am an avid fan of the book "Think and Grow Rich, and that poem is in there as well. Let me go get it and I will type it here for you. I bargained with Life for a penny, and Life would pay no more, However I begged at evening When I counted my scanty store For Life is just an employer He gives you what you ask But once you have st the wages, Why, you must bear the task. I worked for a menial's hire, Only to learn, dismayed, That any wage I had asked of Life, Life would have willingly paid. And its interesting that you bring up that scripture. Even though its common sense, most people don't realize that God wants you to have money, wants you to be rich. Why is that? Because you have work to do!!! God blesses everyone that asks for things in his name, but he cannot do it alone. When is the last time you prayed for something and it fell from the sky? God works through his children to bless his other children, and having money is one way He does this. In example, you've just lost your job, and the rent is due. You pray to the Lord for help. He hears your prayer, and sends to you one of his children that can help, because they have the financial means to do so.

Of course not ... it's a fact that money is important. So, why not earn while doing something that we love doing? We're just being honest. I'm not saying that others who say they're not here for the money are hypocrites. But I guess majority of us here would enjoy the earnings.

I wouldn't say that they all are hypocrites, some are just that slow not to want the money here. Some can't earn it, and some don't want it when they earn it. Come on, be for real. Like my Great-Grandma used to say, "Even a monkey will take some money, and he ain't got a pocket to put it in!!!"

Just a little tidbit of information. Your comment was funny, but, if you earn over $600 from this site in a year, you are required to report it on your taxes. Otherwise you might find him standing there.
