Well, im kind of unsure if this is considered "constipation" but my daughter has always kind of had problems with BMs...now she is 3 and a half and really having a hard time. Her BMs are often large and hard and painful. Im open for suggestions, but please read the list of things that I HAVE tried so that I'm not given suggestions that ive already tried! Last week, she wouldnt go (not that she couldnt, she wouldnt) for nearly 5 days...i gave her Miralax, but no luck. Finally, i had to give her a children's enema--not something I want to do again! Right now im giving her Fibersure in her drink, but we just started that. She needs to be able to go a few times without it hurting so that she wont hold it for days. This is so frustrating and heart wrenching for me.
Things I have tried:
Prune Juice
Prunes
Karo Syrup
Pears
Apples
Broccoli (IF she'll eat it)
Childrens Fiber tablets
Miralax
Suppositories
Water (i water down her juice and pink lemonade also)
Cut back on milk (she has 1-2 cups a day)
If anyone has ideas,i would appreciate it!!! Thank you!

This doesn't sound like constipation from lack of fiber but a medical problem with her muscles in her lower intestines. I would talk to a specialist about this to see why she has this problem. In the mean time keep on increasing the fiber and water...but remember too much fiber can cause constipation when they don't drink enough liquids. Try cooking some prunes and serve them with some yogurt and a sprinkling of raw peanuts chopped fine. Raw peanuts are a great laxative.
You can even make oatmeal cookies with chopped prunes or dried plums and add peanuts to them. Use wheat flour instead of processed white flour.
Do not serve foods that are known to be foods that cause constipation, like rice, cheese and other heavy starchy vegetables. I hope she gets better soon.

My oldest daughter had constipation from the time she was 9months until she was 17 months old. I tried everything under the sun! Nothing worked she finally outgrew it. It was so painful for her, and the doctors said it was normal. I knew it wasnt because the poop would be a HUGE ball! She would be trying for 3 hours and sweating and everything. But she finally has no problems. The only thing I can think of was it was because she was a little over 3 week early and maybe her organs didnt fully develop or something. Good luck with you daughter.
