Hi Everyone! I got a tri-colored basset hound about a month ago. He's now about 5 months old, 26lbs. He is the sweetest dog ever, but he's got issues! One, he isnt house broken...so after him peeing and pooping in the house, i got a crate. He stays outside during nice days and comes in at night and goes to sleep in his crate. If i dont put him in his crate soon after he comes in, he'll definately pee wherever he stands...i did try the puppy pads and he would once in awhile use them. Okay, so two, every time i talk to him, pet him or pick him up, he pees!! I guess its the "submissive" or "nervous" peeing, but man, its ridiculous!! And on to three, which isnt that big of deal, but if he's alone at all, he'll whine and cry. I have a black lab who is with him ALL the time, so that helps on his being alone issue. So anyway, thats Barkley for ya! Any suggestions for me would be greatly appreciated as I have never had a basset hound before!! ps~he smells!

Amber i have a friend that works at "Mans Best Friend" it is a place where they train dogs....She told me in order to train a puppy you have to grate train them...She said to let the puppy sleep in his crate,in the morning take him out to pee and poop and play awhile and bring him back into the crate, feed him and after about an hour take him out again...She said all the time keep in in the crate except whe you take him out to pee and exercise and finally he would learn to hold it until he goes outside, because they do not like to potty in their crate...She said while he is training to keep him in the grate all the time except when you take him out to exercise & potty and that is how you train them....I am assumming that the crate is open enough where he can see you...She also said that if he is to be an inside daog keep him inside,if he stays outside he will not know he is to only go outside....I took her advice when i trained my dog and she did good...I hope this helps, and good luck!

I feel for you. I have a Beagle/Basset mix.. It started off a litle hard with the potty training etc. My best advice to you is to be consistant with your training. Find a method and stick with it. It will pay off eventually. Over little girl is the smartest of the three. Once in awhile when she starts to act nuts and her daddy scolds her, she gets nervous and pees! Petsmart has potty training classes along with other training. We enjoyed that and it did help. Make sure your dog knows that YOU ARE BOSS! Good luck and hang in there!
