Husband had to see the doctor today and found out that

He might have had a small stroke. He has had arthritis, and a bad back, a familial condition since his mother had the same trouble, but he is over two years younger than I and I thought well maybe later on, but not now. He also loves white bread, I even tried that Healthy Pasta, and he did not like that. But what has me concerned was that his oldest sister started out with what was a small stroke in her sixties, and now she is in a nursing home a few years later with a form of ALS. I just got my Old Age Security, and it just seems as as soon as they reach sixty, my husband's family starts going down hill. Now what will happen next? He has an appointment tomorrow and one on Friday.

I am so sorry to hear that, I am still trying to catch up on all my emails, I am so far behind. I know you are concerned, and worried and possibly scared but don't think the worst until it is told to you by the doctor, that is like wishing it on him, so just try to think positive, he is not his family he is a unique human being, keep your chin up okay?

My husband heard about the cat scan and is pleased that it was not due to heart condition, high blood pressure, etc. It just happened. He thinks that he might have gotten a blood clot when he was giving blood. So now we have to make sure that he keeps exercising and taking medicine to keep his blood thin.

I am so sorry to hear of your husbands health problems sweetheart! Maybe with encouragement and medication your husband will be able to maintain his health better than the rest of his family! I certainly hope so. xxx

Well that is a relief! As for the blood clot there are medications that can help break up clots - they are mainly given by injection and i know several people who have been treated succesfully this way! I hope he feels better soon! xxx

I am so sorry to hear that. If your husband is getting regular check ups that's a good start. He does have to take some responsibility for his health though, like eating right and walking or exercise. I am such a hypocrite. I don't do either.

I doubt that anyone follows the rules exactly and I am not a health nut, but he learned that there was nothing wrong with him. He thinks that he got the blood clot when he was giving blood the last time. I do not know what could be done for that except to keep his blood thin so the clot disappears, feed him plenty of salad with vinegar dressing.

Thank you. He is getting a little better now, now that the stroke is related to a blood clot he got giving blood. If he keeps exercising and taking his blood thinner medication, he should get better.

I did read somewhere quite a while back now, that we all have small strokes all the time. These don't usually affect us or cause long term problems. It was temperature related as well as blood pressure. Study was done on rats, but they do think same in humans. The risk is when the clots are to big to pass safely through the blood vessels or they get stuck. Oxygen deprivation is the main cause of stroke related complications.

That part about small strokes frightens me, because there are a lot of old people as opposed to people over the age of sixty=five who are in good health and vigorous. These old people are in walkers, scooters, canes, as are some of the 65 pluses, but they also have the dazed look of hopelessness and vacancy on their faces. My husband learned that he got it giving blood, so perhaps the blood thinner they gave him did not work as well as it should have.

He will have to avoid situations that may cause either a sudden rush of blood to the head or lack of any blood flow there. This is a big indication of a more severe stroke in the future, so I hope that your husband can avoid that misfortune. We here will have both of you in our prayers.

His oldest sister had several small strokes and when I told him he was sick, he went to see the doctor and figured that he did not want to have another stroke. I do not know how he can prevent them, but I hope with all the tests, he might get it so he never has another one. I hope if the doctor goes on a diet, he is able to follow it. Thank you for your prayers.

They are working on it. But I do wish he would do the exercises at home instead of laying on the couch watching TV or sitting at the computer listening to his radio plays. He does get physiotherapy and he found out that his blood pressure and everything else is normal and that clot probably happened when he was giving blood. So he will have to continue his blood thinner medicine and maybe not have anymore of that thick salad dressing he likes. So I do not have to worry about him dying prematurely.

He will be. He just have to take his blood thinner medicine and get off the damn couch, go for walks more often and decide that he no longer loves white bread. That is going to be hard to do. He is so stubborn.

That is awful. I am so sorry to hear that. I hope his results come out better for the both of your sake. I will pray for you. My husband will be 52 this year and has very good health, thank god. I hope he still does when he is able to retire, if there is such a thing by then. I wish you the best tomorrow and on Friday.

At least he went to the doctor when he started to feel something was wrong. His oldest sister had a series of strokes, but did not do anything, and now she is in a nursing home. Anyway he has to go for another evaluation next week. I guess that he will have to follow a diet, and do the exercises.

Oh no suspenseful, how awful..I know what you mean by trying to get our husbands to eat better..Just do what you can and keep trying, maybe this will make him try to eat the healthier foods and can learn to like it..

I try to get him to read the labels but he is more interested in saving money. Why I was looking at crushed tomatoes and he told me to get the store brand, but that contains more salt. He has enough money, stocks and stuff, and yet he feels as though he was still living on the farm as a kid when they hardly had enough good to eat.

I'm sorry to hear of your husband's stroke. When he goes back to the doctor I am sure they will advise him of what his diet needs to be, and he will learn to like some of this stuff if it means avoiding immediate health risks. My husband has high cholestrol so the doctor gave him a list of "don't eat" foods. Most of which he used to love. Don't agpmoze over what conditions could follow because everyone is different. Just be aware of family history and use caution. Good luck on his next visit to the doctor. Hope everything turns out well.

My husband's cholestrol is all right and so is his blood pressure. He got the stroke when giving blood. Somehow he got a blood clot. So it turned out well, but he has to keep on his physiotherapy and they are gradually taking him off his pills. He might have to keep the blood thinning ones though until that clot is loosened.

Man, I'm sorry about that! The only comfort that I can bring you is that just because it was passed on to one family member, does not mean it will be passed on to the other. For example, pretty much every one in my mom's family developed Diabeties in their old age, my mom was one of them. However, her sister never did. They also developed heart problems, my mom being one of them. Her sister and my grandmother never did. So, where it might happen to one sibling, it may not happen to the other. Sometimes it skips children. You said it may have been a small stroke but that means you're not sure yet. Try to remain positive and even if you find out that it was a small stroke, it doesn't mean he will end up like his sister. Everyone goes through things diffrently and at diffrent levels. I know it's hard in situations like this but try to remain positive!

He had a blood clot that he got when he gave blood. That means it was not his fault and that makes me feel easier. He still have to go to physio and he still has to take his blood thinner so that the blood clot will be dissolved and then things will be looking up.

hello, sorry to hear about your husband's condition, i hope he feel better soon. the good thing is you found out soon and can do something about it and make things right. i am not sure if age really does matter in such case coz i have heard some people who have same stories specially knowing that it is in his genes. i know this is a hard time for you and my prayers goes with your family. takecare

It runs in his family, just like heart disease and diabetes runs in mine. I am rather confused, I mean how can we go on traveling I was hoping for us to become snow birds, go away in the winter, but I guess that is now out of the question. We do have Blue Cross, so that is a good thing. I know God will take care of us though.

I hope so. We were at physiotherapy and the doctor said my husband is making improvement. We have another appointment next week and then he will see a specialist or someone to see if anything else can be done. (Like someone to tell him that white bread and margarine are not that good for him and he should eat more vegetables.)

oh, it is always never easy when it runs in the family i am cautious in mine too. anyway, at least you guys have insurance i have seen others who dont and it is not a good situation, i wish this country can be helpful to those who dont have one coz not all can afford it specially the older ones. i am telling my husband to tell his parents to enjoy life while they can and stop worrying and savings for something that they dont need now. i feel it is necessary to save but it is also necessary to enjoy life and not worry too much specially if you are retired. just my own opinion i guess. anyway, i wish you all the best and hope things will get better. takecare

he needss to get his blood pressure down if it is hiigh as that is what usually leads to a stroke. also he needs to learn a healthy lifestyle with some exercise and a diet of veggies, fruits, lo fat protein and dairy and lots of whole grains as that helps us to not have all the health problems.

His blood pressure and chloresteral is normal. He got a CT scan and they gave him a phone call and said that he was normal. So he thinks that it may have happened when he gave blood. He is an A minus and gives blood once a month, but now he can no longer give it because of his stroke. And now he has to get new glasses because he can no longer focus. Yes and getting him to heat healthy is easier said and done. He eats salads and fruit. Maybe I should tie him to a chair and force feed him.

Thank you. He is getting better, doing the physiotherapy and now we are waiting for an appointment to see if more can be done. I find it worrying that I am now walking faster than him. It used to be that I had to really walk fast to catch up with him. NOw I feel like he is much older than me, and I am older than he is.

I am sorry to hear that. I do hope your husband gets better soon. I guess you should tell him to take it slow and don't carry heavy stuff. Serve him healthy foods and fruit juices. Constant visit to the doctor and taking th right medicines would help. Exercise light ones though and plenty of water would do him good. Take care

He will not cooperate. He does the exercise, but he does not like that much healthy. We both love pasta and I tried to feed him that whole wheat pasta, but he would not have it. I even tried that Healthy choice pasta, but that did not work. He does love salads and fruits a lot. We have to go to the physiotherapy every week, but he can only move his leg so far.

I am so sorry to hear of your husband's condition. If I were you I would gather as much information on his family history as possible and ask the doctor how they are going to prevent this in him. Some times they can not but there may be some options out there that can help so let the doctor know your concerns so he knows what he is dealing with and he can research it to find a way to prevent it. As far as cutting out the bad stuff keep in mind as we get order it is hard to change our habits. I know my mom used to keep the caffine coffee can out so my dad did not know she was making him caffine free coffee. Maybe you will have to do a few tricks like that so he thinks he is getting something he really isn't. The mind is a funny thing. They do have oatmeal bread that I was told was better for you and it looks white and tastes good. I wish you the best of luck and will keep you both in my prayers.

Strokes, diabetes, and heart conditions run in his family as it is in my family, and I have tried to eat healthier food and done sneaky things such as making curried rice with brown as well as white rice (amazing how that tumeric or soya sauce can disguise it.) He does not like brown or whole wheat bread and that is a problem. I will check in the oatmeal bread. I do have a slight intolerance to wheat, so I should make some. And he learned that his cat scan is all right, and that it probably happened when he was giving blood. You know that is really mean, being assumed you were bad when it really was not your fault.

My hubby has had a major stroke and a series of small strokes over the past 6yrs. He also has asthma. Strokes don't run in his family so have no idea why he had one in the first place. He's 45 and still doing ok but makes me wonder which one of the 2 will do him in permanently. Hope everything goes ok for your hubby. The dr. will prolly put him on a blood thinner to stop the clots from forming.

Strokes run in my husband's family. I suspect the diet he ate as a kid sort of helped. He was raised Mennonite and they ate lots of pork sausage, potatoes, perogis, and hardly any salad. And well even in the over thirty years we have been married, I wonder whether the healthier food he has eaten has made any difference.

It runs in his family, but they did not eat right when they were younger, lots of white flour, perogis and fatty sausage, more so than our family who was brought up English. I do hope that the doctors get him better and that he can move around again. I hate to see that our retirement being less enjoyable because he cannot get about as fast.

No panic! First of all it is important that his family has the same problems and the only way to avoid them is your husband has a good health. Eat healthy, go to the gym, do tests 2 times at a year. And again it is not sure that he can avoid them.. But there is big posibility! Good luck with the doctor!

It runs in his family. We have to go to a specialist but it is hard to get an appointment for more specialized tests. I just hope he needs just a little operation that may get rid of the clot. I do not want him to turn into an old man and be like those old guys that seem to have that dazed old man look about them. He is two years younger then me.
