how do you no if he's playing you or if he really means it?

have you ever been in a situation where you met someone who seems sincere but really cant read them to well by there actions? This is stupid on my part and i'll admit it but i can't help what happened it just did. i met someone and he was seeing someone at the time and well so was i we kept seeing each other anyways trying to figure out how end things with our other halfs. I was depressed and not getting what i thought I wanted out of my realtionship with the person i was with so i moved out and well since i've done that the other person i am seeing well hes still with her he still calls and i still see him he just keeps telling me he has unfinished business and hes almost done not to give up on him. he tells me he loves me and wants to be with me but i dont like being the other person in his life. i love him alot but sometimes i wonder was what i thought i wanted really worth ending what i had? has anyone every been in the situation before - do they really leave them or do the keep stringing you along to get the best of both worlds.
