I like to travel by train and watch the scenery, but if it is dark or raining I will read. If I was travelling with a companion I would chat with them. I would happily chat with a stranger, but only if they started the conversation, because I would not want to disturb someone who wanted to be quiet. I never find travel boring. Even waiting for a train I can watch other people, when I am not reading.

I would be very interested to read the responses which people post over this discussion bcoz i have to make a trip recently probably on 7th april in a train for the whole day where i would be travelling alone with none of my friends along with me.. Most probably i kill time in the train either by sleeping or moving around in the train or watching the flashing scenery outside. I hardly like reading but if i get some magazine i can spend my time reading it. Moreover it has never been that way that i would be travelling in a train alone for the whole day. Earlier i used to travel hardly for 3 hours so thats feasible. Even if i travel for the whole day i would be there with my family or friends and we would kill time by playing cards.. But i think i will have to find out more options now to kill time when i would be travelling alone. Will have to take an i-pod to listen to music or something like that

Well,I could not do anything different other than sleeping and peeping outside the window. I passed some of my time talking to a stranger or studying. Hey, I have had another trip recently in the month of june. I went to mumbai to my grandmother's place along with my sister-in-law. so iw as not alone this time. And being only a 15 hrs journey, I passed my time easily talking to her or sleeping. I even borrowed a novel from another passenger to read.

I always go on a train trip prepared, usually I will take a good book with me to read or some crossword and suduku puzzles to fill in, most of the time I am quite happy and content to watch the scenery flash by, I am not a talkative person and prefer to keep my own company, I also take drinks and food with me as they are expensive on the train. I usually travel alone and find it better that way and I can relax.

You are right about taking the snacks and drinks. You also know how and when they were prepared.

well, I have my PSP and there is this game I am playing now (Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core) and I am quite addicted to it. So I think no matter how long is the train journey, I am sure I won't feel bored.

I like to listen to my ipod and gaze out the window. Ill also bring some paper and do sketches. If its an early train ride, ill sleep. I dont like to talk to others around me, for they may not want to chat, and I would feel awkard if they had other work to get done, but were just appeasing me.

I have never been fortunate enough to travel by train. I used to travel by bus. I would sometimes talk to the others, or I sometimes would read or do needlework. I also like to sleep when travelling.

I cannot read or anything while I am travelling as it makes me sick! I usually listen to music and I will watch the world go by out of the window. If I have to travel for a long time I usually tend to just fall asleep!

I havent tried travelling on a train yet, though I know there is available here in my location. Maybe soon. For long travel over a bus, maybe 4-7 hours, I keep myself busy watching the scenery outside especially when its my first time to pass that route. If during 3rd or 4th times already, I slept a lot so as to fasten the travel time, I find it faster when I am awake we are already very near to our destination. I don't really go for chatting with other passengers, for I know they wanted to sleep or take a rest also...

I have a smart phone. I loaded with many ebook with pdf format. My phone has a pdf reader. So, whenever I need to kill time, I just read my ebook from my phone. I also can browse the internet with it. If I don't have anything else I want to do with my phone, I try to read anything available like magazine, newspaper, or anything. I also try to enjoy the view. The last thing is sleeping.

About the only time I've ever spent on a train is in England. We just don't travel by train around here - we drive. Austin isn't set up for train travel even tho we do have Amtrack coming thru. If I'm going travel far I fly.

the last time I train traveled was the day after I married my beloved - we were taking the train to new york city where we would then get to the port to begin our honeymoon - so that is 20 years ago now. we spent our time, heh, gazing at each other.

In the day time I look out of the window and enjoy seeing the passing scenery. My favorite landscapes to see are along a picturesque coastline like I saw from Christchurch to Picton or mountain like I saw from Christchurch to Greytown. So I would say that New Zealand has some spectacular train journeys. The longest train trip that I have done was in New Zealand where it lasted 36 hours. It was from Cairns to Brisbane and I got on it in the morning of one day, stayed on it all day and all night, then arrived the next day. I saw pretty views out of the window like the sugar cane fields. After dark I got a bit bored so I wandered down to the Club Loco Car. I got chatting to a really lovely man. He later became my husband but we are now divorced. One of the best train rides I have done was from Mombasa to Nairobi and I saw a giraffe out of the window. In Europe I have been on many trains and slept in comfortable compartments all night. I have often chatted with fellow travelers.

I would also would love to chat to some strangers. It pays knowing more people and learning from them. Like getting to know stuff and what leads them on the travel. Of course, you just need to be careful because not everyone is trustworthy and truthful. If I don't have anybody to talk with or I'm not sleepy, a good book is a nice way to kill time.

Dear Sophia, I like train travelling in the sense that you get everything you need from where you are sitting. That is I don't have to cook, wash etc. I just take the rest given to me , enjoying the scenery, reading books and solving puzzles. I uesd to travel for 30 to 36 hours when I travel from chennai to New delhi, where my husband was working at that time. My children were small at that time. So it was easy to play with them words building, scrabbles etc. solving crosswords was another craze for me those days, like the present day Sudoku. I used to enjoy long trips in train. All the best
