I saw a documentary today, and the girl who works in the WallStreat got her first job in a quite famous corporate, but she got no salary in the first couple of monthes.
It may sounds rediculars, but this is a true story.Although there were no salary, she accpetted the job since she believed this would be a promising career.
I think she is a smart girl, and if I were her, I would make the same decision.
So, what about you? Will you accept that job if there were no pay for a long period?

Well, I know that work without pay is illegal, but the thing is if you ask for too much (even if it is your right under the constitution),you cannot get that job at the first beginning!

If I work all time with no salary in a short time or work part time in a long time, I think I'll agree with you.
But if work all time with no salary in a long time, I'll not agree with you. Because when you work with no salary, what food you eat, what clothes you wear.

Actually, this woman chose to work just because she had no money to support her life as well as her family!
She just bet with herself that she could get that job at last.I do feel that her poor condition encouraged her to make a better job, and thus got that job!

If it's for a worthy cause or if I would gain valuable experience leading to a great career, yeah sure I would consider it. A job shouldn't be just about the paycheck. It should also be about helping others, learning, and being a useful member of society.

It really depends on the nature of the job. If the job is going to be high paying, lucrative and have a very bright future, I may forgo up to a couple of months without pay initially. I will treat this as an investment for the future. But usually, firms have to pay their employees they hire unless this initial period is packaged as on-the-job training, internship or some kind of probationary period where it is mostly a period of learning, training and picking up the job by shadowing someone experienced, in which case the firm is investing money in them, hence there is no salary paid.

Depends on the job and if I had enough money to make it to salary. But at least you would know firsthand if you would like the job or not.

only if it is temporary volunteer jobs for experience and on the side. i have already done some volunteer work on the side for fun, more like extracurricular activities. i have already done a Public Relations intern, Market Research Intern, Artist Intern, copy editor for college journal, community theater work, newsletter editor of the home association where i live, chamber of commerce work, performing arts center booth attendant, and currently, i am doing a volunteer journalist/editor/project and street team for virtual reality site on the internet.

Accepting an internship can be a very saavy move. Having the experience to go along with a recently acquired education opens up all kinds of positions that wouldn't normally be within reach. I would have loved to have that opportunity when I initially joined the work force but, realistically, how many of us could live for several months without a salary? Perhaps a recent graduate still living at home, or someone with a working spouse and no children...As we get older and take on more responsibilities, that paycheck becomes essential.

Yes I will. Honestly here in Philippines we have the worst experience. I'm actually a nurse. Hospitals here give as salary as low as 120USD per month. we're in in US nurses are paid 30 USD per HOUR.
Volunteer is also common here. and you know what, we still need to pay them just to work in their hospital without salary or even an allowance. In one hospital, you'll work for 6 months without salary and you need to pay them 10,000 pesos (220 dollars).
she is more bless that they allow her to work there without her paying them...

I guess if i dont need money, i can make do without a salary for a few months... but never really expect them not to pay me... more so if it is an income generating company. I will volunteer for social work and not exect any salary or even allowances. but i guess since these companies are earning.. they should be giving you a portion of what you deserved since you helped them earn too.

I would think it is common practice in some industries, such as say a bigtime newspaper or magazine to take on someone with no pay. The "salary" is the experience. The person is "building" their resume in the field they want to break into. I would see this happening with fresh out of college people possibly. As for me, if I were in my 20's and just starting out and had anopther income to support myself such as a husband or parent or trust fund I might. But now, no way, I have bills to pay and parttime jobs just don't cut it. I can see where a young person wi=ould work say a waitressing job at night to take the no pay job to break into an industry. It is a hard start.

It's a common practice here in our country to do OJT's (On the Job Training) or internship. Most newly grads accepts this kind of job for experience and as an entry to a well known company or establishment. They gain experience for the actual job they wish to have in exchange for their services. Other companies give allowances for food and transportation to the interns. I was lucky I got a job shortly after I graduated from college. If not, I would have also accepted this internship thing either for entry or for added experience in my resume.

i would accept the job like she did. even if i'm not getting paid for a couple of months, it's a good opportunity for me to learn more and have some experiences about it.

I would of course have to make sure that i would at some point recieve a salary. If i did not then what would be the point. I understand there is potential to do great things, but at what cost? I would think that it was not really worth it in the end. I probably would do it right now though since i am living under the family roof.
