Should you travel with your pets?

When you go on vacation do you bring any of your pets with you? I always bring my dogs along for the trip. I used to also take my ferrets because no one would watch them. What do you do? If you don't have any pets would you take them with you if you did? Or are you the type that thinks pets should stay at home??

I have taken my dog with me on vacation a couple of times. It gets very costly and some places do not accept pets. I would take him with me everywhere I go, if I could. I hate to leave him at home by himself. We usually have to put him in a kennel at the vet wwhen we go places. I hate that and I miss him when we are gone. We don't go many places now though, so I do not have to worry about it.

My two chihuahuas love to go for car rides. My springer spaniel, Winston though he loved going on road trips...he was so well behaved and personable we even got to stay in hotels that normally didn't accept pets... I used to take weekend trips 2 to 3 times a month to the country, wildlife watching. He would sit quietly watching moose with us...one time one looked right in the car window and they were nose to nose but I couldn't get my camera out quick enough to get a picture...It would have been so cute to have. Winston was killed by a car Jan 05. I haven't taken nearly as many trips since that.

Oh how horrible to have your dog stolen... that would be like kidnapping a child.

I am so sorry to hear that. We have lost a few pets too. all of my dogs loved to ride in cars also. My dog knows when we say we are going to the bank. He will get so excites because he knows he gets to go and they give him a treat. We lost our first dog when a car ran over him also. We were getting ready for work and we let him out to potty and he didn't come right back in. Someone had ran over a rodent in the road and he went to sniff it out. A car came by and ran over him. I cried for days. We then bought our first Pomeranian and we left for work one day and when we got home, our home was burglarised and they even stole my dog. We awere so sick over that for days too. We love our pets like they are kids.

A couple of years ago I took my dog, Secret, to the Channel Island of Sark. We drove for two and a half hours to get the port then he traveled in his pet carrier on the car deck on the ferry. He didn't like the sea journey at all and we weren't allowed to stay with him. We camped on the island and had a stunning sea view. Secret so enjoyed walks around the gorgeous little island. We had so much fun and I would like to go on holiday with him again. Since then I have got Magic, my second dog. Secret and Magic both have pet passports and so I can take them overseas.

This year will be their first time on a boat. One of my good friends just bought a new boat for this season. I'm hesitant to bring Bella as she is only a year old and gets so excited. Gizmo is 3 and a lot more laid back so I may just bring him the first time. I may take them on the ferry to Martha's Vineyard this summer but haven't decided yet. Blessed be, Mari

If someone is travelling with their animals they have to make more frequent stops because of the animals and make sure they have everything they may need on hand. I have travelled with my animals before several times in fact and when I went on vacation with my uncle they took their dog too, Travelling with animals is a learning experience and a stinky one if you don't listen or attend to your animals needs. Pets should never stay home alone. Anything can happen while your away. So it is best to get a sitter or take to a kennel if your going to be gone for more then a day.

My dog is too big to take anywhere, and I'm sure he'd be freaked out to go on a plane. Whenever I travel by plane, I find someone to care for him while I'm gone. But if i go somewhere by car, then I migt take him along.

It costs so much now to bring your dog onboard with you that I don't anymore. If I am traveling other than by car, I leave them home with my mom.

It all depends on where i travel. If i'm going to an aunt's or my grandmas or my parents i know they are ok with dragon coming along. The rest of my pets are outdoor farm cats or outdoor dogs who dont travel well and they stay home with a neighbour caring for them. If i'm travelling to the city and staying in a hotel or motel i dont take her with me - she doesnt belong there. She stays with my mom and dad. I've never taken her with me on a plane trip either...i think it would be too hard on her and shes much happier running free and playing with my sister or following my dad around for a few days when i go away. She loves car rides and goes with me to my parents house regularly or even comes with me to work. Hotels and such already have a bad rep of not being totally clean i'd rather not have a pet contribute to the issue or...dig something nasty out from under a bed.
