Hello. I went to the doctor today and found out that I have PCOS. So, they put me on a medicine called Metformin that is supposed to really help. Have any of you taken this med before? Does it really help? Does it help you lose weight, which is what my doc told me? Any info would be appreciated! Thanks!

Yes! I have been on it for some time now, as has my sister (we both have PCOS and insulin resistance). The Metformin has helped both of us SO much. In addition to it aiding with weight loss, one of the things that made me happiest was that I found wounds began to heal faster, and I felt more mentally alert than I had in ages.
Personally, I was warned of the side effects in the first week or so, but had none. As far as I know, my sister didn't, either. That said, our doctor introduced it to us gradually, slowly increasing the dose a bit at a time until our current dose of 1000mg twice a day. I don't know what your doctor has told you to do, but perhaps if you have problems you might consider this approach as well (of course, check it with your GP just in case, since I'm not a doctor, etc. etc., blah blah blah).
I really hope it works for you. It certainly did for us.

Thanks so much for the response! He has started me out on 500mg once a day and then he intends to gradually increase it. I will start taking it today. Thanks again for the information!

I have been on Metformin for over 5 years now, with the only excpetion being when I have been pregnant. As for the weight loss, it personally helped me greatly (I lost 80 pounds in 1 year), but I also was eating rather healthy and exercising a bit. I have found that if I am not eating healthy and/or not exercising at all, the weight does not come off. The Metformin also helped several of the other PCOS symptoms, such as excessive hair growth, absent periods, and it kept me from gaining weight regardless of what I ate (as long as I ate reasonable portions). As for the eating healthy, this did not mean a strict diet. I ate according to the food pyramid (6-10 servings of grains (I ate mostly whole grains), 3-5 servings of veggies, 2-4 servings of fruit, 2-3 servings of dairy, and 2-3 servings of protein), but also allowed myself small portions of anything I was craving. I never felt deprived of anything and found that by allowing myself small portions of things I wanted, it helped prevent me from bingeing later.
One thing I do want to warn you about is the awful side effect that is VERY common with Metformin, especially in the beginning. Be prepared for some serious cramping and sudden needs for a toilet. My advice is to head for a toilet at the first sign of a cramp because they only get worse and you could very well have a messy, smelly accident if you wait too long. Once you use the toilet, you feel much better and should be fine for several hours. As bad as this sounds, do not let it scare you off, just be aware it is likely to occur. Metformin is an amazing medicine for treating PCOS, at least it has been for me. It is difficult for me when I am pregnant (which I am now) to not be able to take it and I look forward to when I am able to return to using it at the regular strength (I only take half the dose when nursing because it seems to affect the babies bowels if I take it full-strength. The half dose helps keep the symptoms at bay, but does not help as much as full strength). If you have any questions about the medicine, do not be afraid to ask your doctor and/or pharmacist and feel free to message me with any other questions you may have.

Thank you so much!!! I heard that the first week on it could be bad, but I wasn't really sure. Thanks for the help and the response, too!

I was taken of Metformin about two weeks ago do to everytime I went anywhere I was severly sunburned within 15min. It also cause sever depression which the doctor said is very rare. I look at it like this it works great for some and not so good for others everybody is different and responds differently to different things. I hope it works great for you good luck.

I was on Metformin for a while actually. Not only did it help me lose weight, it helped keep me pregnant. Women with PCOS have higher miscarriage rates, so I was on it for the whole pregnancy. My daughter is 4 months old, and I've been off it since she was born. I should start back up though, as I've noticed weight gain starting again. My only real side-effect was needing to use the bathroom a lot more.

I have PCOS and have just started taking Metformin. My doctor started me on 500mg once a day and this week I have started 500mg twice a day. The bathroom problems only lasted about three days, but I am having a terrible upset stomach even still. It was starting to get better last week, but after increasing the dosage this week, I feel nauseated again. My doctor says it may take a few more weeks to get back to normal, but from what I hear, it is going to be worth the uncomfortable few weeks once it is over.
My doctor also says that it will help me to lose weight. I was having a difficult time losing weight, even on weight watchers and following a strict diet with exercise. I am hoping that after the Metformin begins to work, losing weight will become possible as long as I continue to eat healthy and exercise.
Good luck with the medication, I hope that it really helps us both!!

I was on Metformin on and off for a year. I never got very good at remembering to take it, but when I did, I noticed that I wasn't gaining weight anymore even though I wasn't really dieting. You do have to kinda modify your diet because I found that the more carby and greasy foods I ate, the more often I had to run to the potty. So losing weight is almost inevitable.
