Why can't car companies agree where to put the dang gas cap?

With all the stupid regulations and universal configurations imposed on car companies, why are they still making us look stupid every time we fill up our tanks and pull up on the wrong side? 
My wife's car is on the opposite side from mine and I always get messed up.
Gas prices are bad enough without making us look silly.
I just know car manufacturer big wigs are staking out gas stations and laughing their toockuses off!
Anybody know something I don't?

LOL. that is funny. I am so used to driving our car and the gas cap is on the right hand side of it. I hardly ever drive our truck but when I do, the gas cap is on the left sode of it. I feel so dumb when I pull up to get gas, get out, and then realise my gas cap is on the other side. that is so dumb, LOL.
