Anyone have good tips on how to spend less and get better food? I want to go local and organic, but organic is so expensive. We eat lots of carbs because they are the cheaper ones. I am trying to stop that. But unfortunately we don't have a lot of extra money to spend.

You cant go wrong with baked chicken and salad. the supermarket I go to sells chicken in a 18 pack. I like to season maranade and bake it all at once and then store it in the freezer and just come home and go at it. chicken and salad is healthy and wont leave your wallet feeling light.

I second the idea of a CSA if you can find one locally. There are a few other ways that might help, too. If you can possibly grow any of your food, even a lettuce plant or two and some radishes in a container, that will save money.
Also, if you have a farmer's market nearby, go near closing time and offer to buy leftover produce for less than the asking price. You might get turned down if they have another market for it, but if they don't, they'd usually rather get something for it than nothing at all and have to haul it back home.
Go to the source whenever possible. Roadside stands and farmers you can connect with will have better prices.
Put the word out this growing season that you'll take garden surplus, then can or dehydrate what you can't use right away. Putting food away for later is a great way to save any surplus you come by.
Think about grains, too. Barley, wheat, rye and so on, can fill tummies with good nutrition and while they may seem expensive at first, they "stick to the ribs."
Use beans, lentils, peas, etc. They're inexpensive and good for you, too. There are plenty of recipes on the internet for just about everything.
