Sorry to butt in Janelle, but I'm still having difficulty responding to discussions.
I would definitely want a background and credit check on someone I planned to live with and depended on, financially. It never hurts to ask for references either!

think about what you like, what keeps you happy and calm and also make a list of pet peeves, when you interview, be blunt ask if the prospect can describe a normal day for themself?

1. Try to find someone who keeps the same hours as you do. My son's first college roommate stayed up all night and slept all day (no, he didn't go to classes).
2. If you like things neat and tidy, find a roommate who is the same way. That same roommate of my son's had so much junk on the floor that my son had to take a running jump at the ladder to his loft bed because he couldn't get near enough to just climb it.
3. Make prior agreements as to how you're going to handle mutual situations like having company over or groceries. Hold each other to your agreement. With groceries, if all else fails, have your own cupboards and lock them.
4. Make sure that your roommate is financially responsible enough to have his share of the rent money each month.
just a few suggestions. good luck!

I would make sure that you have compatible lifestyles first and foremost. If you like to party and your roommate doesn't it makes it hard to work out. If you drink and they don't then that will eventually cause a problem. I would also have something in writing so that if they don't pay their part or whatever you can take whatever action is neccessary to get them out of the house.
