Do You Shed?

I just noticed yesterday after getting out of the shower that I lose a heck of a lot of hair. I guess I knew I lost a lot of hair but it really struck me yesterday. Upon rinsing my hair I pulled my good hand through it and came away with enough hair to make a dozen wigs for Barbie dolls. Then when I combed it I had triple the amount left in the comb as I did when I wrung it out with my hand.
My hair isn't thick but it isn't thinning either. I don't understand how I lose on average, I would say about, 300 hairs a day and am not bald by now.
Do you shed? When your sweetie leaves to go to work in the morning and hugs you goodbye, will he be picking your hair off of his suit for the rest of the day? Do you leave a trail of DNA behind you everywhere you go?
Do women have the same issues with thinning hair and baldness that men do?
When should I start to worry about my incessant sheding?
I have already had my thyroid checked, it isn't that. It could be stress, but I have noticed that everything a doctor doesn't have an answer for is blamed on stress nowadays.
Do you shed?

Funny that you should mention shedding. I have two sheds in my garden but both are in real need of repair. The larger of the two resembles a pavilion with a long verandah on the outside that in days past we could sit out on and survey the estate whilst drinking a gin or two. The interior has a paper type covering rather like wallpaper that has not been stuck down, or up. Now it seems to me that as you are losing your hair, for which you should see a trichologist, you might be able to help me out with an alternative wall covering. Your hair is reasonably long and you are losing 300 per day. I have calculated that in about a month you will have shed enough hair to cover one panel of one shed. Woven into a blanket this should keep us cool during the forthcoming Summer months and the reverse in the Winter. Over the period of a year we should have enough to cover both sheds. This would be an act of international cooperation and would be, to us, on a par with the annual Christmas Tree that the good people of Norway give to London every year. I would naturally like to help you out by answering your question. But it is my good fortune to have retained much of my hair, relatively unusually in a man of my age. I have experience moments of great stress in my life but the only thing that I shed then was tears, not hair. For those that might read this and be horrified at the levity with which I treat this, what I know is a very serious issue for many people, women and men, I would like to tell them that if my dear friend Cyn isn't amused she will demand reparation. I hate to think how, but it will be slow and tortuous hopefully.

I would love to blanket you in my hair but that would have made me have to start this discussion under a different category
Now seeing as how you like the thought of slow and tortuous reparation I am now conflicted. Do I pretend to be angry and think of nefarious ways to extract my retribution? Or do I continue to laugh at how well you answered this discussion?

Everybody sheds. All the time. And those with long hair notice it more.
Now that my hair is shorter, I don't seem to have as much of problem. But then not being pregnant anymore and therefore going bald, helps cut back on hair loss a lot! LOL
However a strange thing - I was cleaning between, around and under the keys on my computer today with an artist's brush and it was amazing the amount of hair that I dug out. They were all short, curly and blond. I am not short, curly and blond. Neither is anyone in my house. A conundrum. So after some thought, I came to the realization that computers are indeed very sexy beasts. Mine is blond. Which automatically makes me think - a she, and one who spends her 'down time' engaging in activity that leaves her short and curly's between my keys! So you are not alone Cyn. Everybody sheds. ROFL

Too funny. See my first thought was that someone in your household was getting it on at the computer desk. But if your computer is indeed a blonde female that could be the reason for the amount of mistakes you have made this year.

ROFL and too funny right back at you! That's now my story and I'm sticking to it, and am back to being allowed 6 mistakes this year! Whew! What a relief! LOL

Actually, my hair was falling out in handfuls last summer. I was stressed; my anxiety was at an all-time high. When I have bad anxiety I stop eating. I started dropping weight like crazy and when you weigh between 98-100 lbs naturally..
I looked sick. I was away from home for 4 months. When I got back and things settled down and my diet was regulated again I noticed my hair wasn't falling out in clumps anymore.
I know being low in Folate or Folic Acid can lead to hair loss too. Orange juice and cereals are a good source.

I rarely eat cereal and I only buy OJ once a month then get 1 glass of it if I am lucky. Maybe I am lacking a mineral but I eat plenty of fruit and fresh veggies so I don't think it is my diet. My stress level is a bit off the charts these days, that could be the cause. I will know in a few weeks when I start taking antidepressants my doctor gave me. If I notice my hair doesn't fall out like it is now I will chalk it up to the stress if it continues I will look for other causes. Thanks so much for your comment.

Not eating enough could be doing it too.
I was actually losing hair like that for awhile. It scared me and I went to the doctor. She said it could be the sulfates in commercial shampoos and all the damage from coloring my hair, etc..
She told me to try sulfate free shampoo and after going through 50 to find one I liked, I have to say she was right.
I have been using Jason naturals shampoo for about 4 months or a little longer and it has stopped the problem. I also haven't colored my hair even though I need it. It has made my hair healthier and shinier too. People tell me how pretty it is now. I never had that happen before not even when it was long. I have noticed every now and again maybe 1 hair come out.
Can't hurt to try if your worried.

My local grocery store has it in the organic section. Walmart doesn't have anything sulfate free. If you have a Vitamin shop or other organic food store in your area they should have it. I use the Lavender. :) Do you have whole foods? They have it there too...

That might have something to do with it. I noticed that I have always lost a lot of hair except when I was pregnant so maybe my body is lacking something that I produce a lot of when with child. My hair was always shiny and healthy then. I will try sulfate free shampoo to see if it makes a difference. Where do you go to buy it because it would take me days to read the ingredients on every bottle in the shampoo isle at WalMart and I can't say I have ever heard of Jasons Naturals.

Cyn, darling daughter, are you typing with only one finger? Are you in pain? Poor baby...... Tell me what I can do.
Sweetie, I've gotta tell ya, it's not just nowadays that doctors have blamed everything on stress, particularly and specifically for women. In my mother's day, they gave out 'nerve pills' for virtually any complaint a woman had. Then in the 60s they gave out Valium like it was candy, a palliative for whining women everywhere. Disgusting. So, don't think it's just nowadays. It's been going on forever.
And as to the hairthing? (sorry, new computer and keyboard and I can't get used to where thespacekey meets up with my thumb) Women definitely have thesame issues with hair loss as men. That's why there's women's Rogaine.
Andhere in the Lou, wehave a place called Hans Weiman, a leading hair restoration center, and they do everyone and everything. Quite well renowned, I think.
SHedding? Yup, hubby does it, certainly. He's got long, mostly gray hair and I have to pullit out of the bathtub drain periodically or else it'll plugthings up. My own hair is short these days, and I don't notice it falling out all over my clothes. Maybe it does, but I don't notice it. I'd really rather not.
It's your mother's side of the familythat determines hair loss or not, so look to her for your 'preview' ofwhat's to come.
VERY nice to see you out and about, valiantly keeping your presence here in the forefront, fulfilling your duties as oneof our fearless leaders. Bravo! You are whatis known as a trooper, darlin. Mama's proud of ya.

I am actually using all of my fingers to type type type away. It is pulling on the bandages and stretching the skin on the top of my hand and causing me serious discomfort but since I need to be able to type 70+ words a minute to be "well enough to perform my previous job duties* I figured what better a way to see if the surgery worked like the doctor assured me it would.
This way when I go back to him on the 15th and have complaints of pain I will know that I am still not capable of performing my job duties and he needs to see if there are other issues that need to be addressed before signing that work release.
so yes mama I am suffering so but it is for a good cause.

Ouch, Cyn! You are very brave, darlin, and if they do get you back, they should thank their lucky stars! Try not to overdo it too much though, you don't want to hurt yourself. I know that everything hurts, but you know what I mean. Take your meds, do what you're supposed to, be a good girl, yeah, who am I kidding? You know what to do. (mama says, isn't my girl brave?)

I have this problem. All people shed. Men just don't show it like women do. Long hair definitely shows. I have really thick hair, and I brush my hair a lot to cut down on leaving my "DNA trail" behind me.
By the way, I liked your word choice for that.

I started calling it that when I was joking with a friend that I could never kill anyone. All the cops would have to do is follow my trail of DNA right to me. I'm worse then Hansel and Gretel with the bread crumbs.
I know all people lose a certain amount of hairs a day I just think mine is more than the average as of late. If it doesn't get better in the next couple of weeks I will complain to my doctor again when I go back in May.

Some people tell me that I shed a lot. But I've noticed that if I brush my hair out, I get a lot in the brush and then that's it. Normally though, I do not have time to brush my hair daily. I usually brush it once a week or once a month. So if that's the case, a lot falls out in the shower, some on my shirt, etc. I've learned to just put it up in a clip and it won't get all over everything.
I think if you have thick hair especially, shedding more of it is natural.

I do shed heaps. When I wash my hair there's usually a few hairs in the plug hole and more when I blow-dry and comb it. I have naturally thin hair but my hair isn't thinning. My grandmother has thin hair and it is quite thin now that she's in her 70s. I think I get my hair from her so I know that when I'm old my hair is going to be like hers! It is very annoying and i don't know what to do about it. I've tried taking vitamins because one hair dresser said it is a result of an unbalanced diet but that didn't work. I think it's just how my hair is.

I have this problem too. I don't know what it's about. I have heard that taking flaxseed oil can help bu that is also estrogen-simulating so it's not good to take if you are on birth control or pregnant, because too many hormones are bad. It may be the legnth of your hair. I foudn when my hair was longer it looked worse, because each hair that shed out would look like a bunch of hairs once it was balled up. Also if you wear pony tails much your elastic could be pulling out or breaking hairs. Always use the hair elastics that DON'T have a metal part.

I have the all elastic hair ties but my hair is very very long and it does look worse when I ball up the huge amount of hairs I lose. I would compare it to a chinchilla. lol

I too have noticed this lately. Just in the last three months, I've noticed that when I take a shower and I'm rinsing my hair, more hair is coming out on my hands than I'm accustomed to. When I get out and brush and style my hair, there is plenty more there as well. I checked my pillow the other day and noticed that there was a bunch there too. I have thick hair, but I almost expected to find a balding patch due to the amount of hair that I've been losing. There's none to be found. I still have a ton of hair. The only thing I can think of is that it comes with age.

it also happened on me so i suggest that you should switch to other shampoo and conditioners as well this can be sometimes as one of the reason why we lose some hair

well i m a guy but i too loose a lot of hair i mean by the rate i m loosing hair i should be bald by the time reach 28.its really sad.i do wanted to know whts it like to be bald but hey not this way.i think its a combination of stress and us depending upon shampoo's and chemicals.they are bad for us.dont u agree?

I do agree that the crap they put in shampoo can't be at all healthy for your hair. I used to use this stuff called Aquamarine that was made from sea kelp and other "natural" stuff but they stopped making it, or at least stores here stopped carrying it.
Guys can shave their head and look "good" bald. Women just look weird. Last thing I want to be called in Sinead :)

Yes, and it is mostly because of all of the lotions I have to put on my body, stress, my somewhat bad diet, and because of all of the medications that I have to take. By the way, when I shed, I really shed. You do not want to be around me when my skin begins to come off, it looks like a horror film.

I shed a lot too. Some times of the year are worse than others. I think I'm about to go through another shedding anytime now. But it seems to be worse in the fall.
I am wearing my hair quite a bit shorter now than I have in years, and I'm noticing a big difference, and I'm not shedding as much as I did when it was longer (past my shoulders).

I shed as well, and it bothers me from time to time. I never had issues before I joined the army, but ever since then I've had problems. And its due to the fact that I always had to have my hair pulled back really tight and then it was pretty much 24/7. And so every time I took my hair down, I use to see so much hair, but now that I'm finally out, it's not as bad but it still isn't how it use to be.

Hey cyn, I think everyone sheds. My hair hangs down to my butt. I lose hair like crazy. Not that you can tell. My hubby is always pulling my hair off of himself. Didn't you say you were on some meds though that could have a little to do with it and the stress. but you are right stress gets blame for anything unexplainable these days. We all have too much stress that's why they get away with blaming it for everything. When the tub gets stopped up and my hubby has to rod it
out he always pulls out huge gobs of hair and since he is a little light on top it definitely isnt's his!! I have known women that have what they called open windows
all over their heads. Usually a little bit up there in age though so yes women can have problems with baldness just like men.

I did..there was a time when everytime I take a bath I almost clog up the drain in the shower because of my hair..then i thought that its normal to shed 100 strand a day. I was using a hot oil cream that time as a conditioner, then when i ran out of it there were no stocks anymore in the store thats when i noticed i had less hair falling.the cream caused the falling hair, so maybe you should try changing your shampoo, conditioner or anything that youre using for you're hair..
