I've been off-line most of the night until now as there was bit of excitement in my neighborhood and just a few feet away from my apartment building. Don't exactly know what triggered it off or if it was deliberately set. But I was talking on the phone to a friend of mine when I heard this weird sound coming out from the front of my building...didn't think much of it, as there are a lot of strange sounds on my block. Not more then ten minutes pass, still yakking on the phone and hear fire engines....so told my friend, just let me see what's up and hung up.
YIKES! I look out my window and see that only a few feet away from my apartment building is this huge friggin fire!! Both a car parked on the street and a pile of trash waiting to be picked up tomorrow morning are engulfed in incredibly huge flames..the smoke coming from it was unbearable and was so thick that it looked like a dense fog down the whole block---yeesh never saw anything like it in all these years!! I was almost half expecting the car to blow up or something but thank God it didn't, but it took the firemen at least a full hour to put the fire out...can't help wonder who the poor slob it is that owns the car though or if it was abandoned and deliberately set
So---how is you're nice relaxing Friday night?
Have you ever witnessed or seen something bizarre like this??

to a lesser degree.
one fall i was going downstairs and smelled wood burning, really strong.i really didn't think much of it,because a few of my neighbors burn weird smelling woods in their fireplaces.
i asked my brother if he smelled something odd.
he said "no,not really".
no sooner than i said "kind of smells like a fire"
i had looked out the back window of my house to see a neighbors house, fully engulfed on top,and a few trees as well.i was like "oh,there it is".
the engines were there at that point.
what happened was a tenant used the fireplace with his mattress snugged up against it.he tried getting the burning mattress out thru the hallway, and set the rest of the house up.
but to look out the window to see that..
i was actually thankful there was space between our houses.

this guy was stoned all day, everyday.
he wasn't thinking too well.needless to say when the landlord rebuilt,he didn't rent to him again.too out there LOL
yup-green wood is unseasoned wood-and in some cases, right off the tree.
pine is particularily dangerous-sap gets stuck to stuff..it's what they make turpentine of.

I got back to talking to my friend afterward...where she lives she says a lot of people burn the wrong kind of wood, she called it green wood?? Ever heard of that..but whatever it is it must stink..LOL
Kind of a "dumb" neighbor of yours..like why would anyone have a mattress near a fireplace anyway...like duh? And instead of trying to haul this burning mattress out, why not just make a beeline and get buckets of water and start trying to put it out?? If he at least kept it in the one room the fire could have been contained there.

Jeez! I am glad you are ok! I don't think I have ever seen anything like that in my neighborhood. There was once a fire that started in the house across the street and on the opposite corner from my Mom and Dad's house a few years ago during Christmas. The husband and wife went out for the night. She had gotten a table arrangement and lit the candle and decided to let it burn down a bit while they were out because, something about the candle being a bit big or something. Anyway, my brother was outside having a smoke and he came in telling us to call 911 because he could see a fire in the window on the side of the house across the street. My brother-in-law at the time was a voluntary fire fighter where he and my sis lived in Iowa so, he pretty much just went with his instinct. He tried to get the window open, tried the doors and then just broke the window and used a fire extinguisher to stop the fire. It was oretty bad by the time he got in there. The entire wall all the way up to the ceiling was crispy fried. But, if he had waited until the fire trucks arrived, if he hadn't done what he did, more than half the house would have been on fire. By my brother seeing it because he was out having a smoke (a bit ironic huh?) and my bro-in-law breaking into the house, they both saved those homeowners a lot of money, practically all of their belongings and, really their entire house.
I know I have seen some other odd ball stuff that leaves me scratching my head but, it may be too late to think of it right now.
I once saw a huge meteor fall from the sky. And, when I say huge, I mean huge. I don't know where it landed...but, the thing flew past my friends and I while we were standing outside chatting at Cedar Point (the ammuzement park in Ohio) one evening. I had gotten off of my shift a couple hours ago and was meeting up with my friends as they got off their shift (we worked in the park). My back was turned to the meteor (or meteorite...can't remember which is which). My one friend was facing me and suddenly he stopped talking, looked up, his eyes got big like saucers and his jaw dropped. I kept asking him what and all he could muster was to point. I turned around to see this huge fire ball headed towards us, watched as it passed over our heads and traveled far away before it got too low to see. I likely landed multiple hundreds of miles away as it was still really high in the sky but, even as high in the sky as it was, that thing was gigantic. I can't even fathom how big it actually was. But, as high in the sky as it was, as big as it looked from that high up, it had to be ginormous. I even tried to catch where it fell on the news or in the paper but, never saw anything.
So, that is about as crazy as it gets for me. But, if I remember anything else, I will come back and share it with you.
The meteor/meteorite I think was the coolest thing I have ever experienced though. I never asked, but I think my friend may have dropped a little load in his britches he looked that scared. LOL!

Hehehe...I think I might have "dropped" a load if I saw a gigantic meteorite as well, but that really must have been something to witness and I'm surprised nothing was later in the news about it...I mean how often does something like that happen?
And yes, rather ironic that your brother-in-law decided to have a smoke at the time....guess kind of perfect timing for if he hadn't been out there when he was a lot more damage could have resulted in that home

My nice relaxing Friday night has completely relaxed my brain. All I can think of is that when I was nine I was bathing and we had a grass fire in the backyard. My mom was probably smoking while hanging the laundry. My mom, and older sister, and the neighbors beat it out with wet rugs. The neighbor boy (from Holland) went home and told his mom that my mom was pregnant, she thought it was funny as she always had a big belly and swayed back. It was just a week later she felt movement, and she was forty two. Forty three by the time my baby sister was born,

When she was pregnant she would quit smoking. Her monthly cycle had stopped, for over a year, before she got pregnant, so yes, she was very surprised that she was pregnant. My little sister was a little low birth weight compared to the rest of us, but still over six pounds. Mom did question whether or not the cancers my sister got as a young adult were due to some genetic change from Mom smoking. I do not think it was, I think it was from the toxic chemicals sprayed to control weeds at the schools and parks, as she spent lots of time outside, and communities with military bases were given a lot of a chemical related to agent orange after the Vietnam war.

Mmm...guess your baby sister then was a "menopause" baby--I've heard that happens a lot actually
That's terrible about those chemical that were sprayed at schools and parks....wonder if they do still use them...used to notice some years ago that once in awhile big signs would be around warning not to go on the grassy areas of parks due to spaying and have a "nice" skull and crossbone emblem on it

Mmmm...you're mom was smoking??? I guess that was back when, when they didn't realize how bad it was for a pregnant woman to smoke I guess your mom was surprised to find out she was pregnant again and at a relatively later age too

Long ago and far away... we had just moved into our new house and I was painting and papering the master bedroom when I heard a funny little popping noise. I thought the cat was playing with an empty carton. Then I heard sirens, very close, then a knock at the door...
Seems that something in the garden centre across the road had exploded and caused a fire, complete with the thick black smoke. The knock at the door was the fire marshal advising me to close my windows and stay inside, as the garden centre had been selling various pesticides and such, and they didn't know what was in the smoke.

Yeesh...wonderful, so you had the potential of inhaling toxic crap with that fire, same as here...never know what kind of toxins are released in the air when a car fire occurs, or what is in the garbage that was burning...did stink to high heaven and was making me cough a lot even WITH the windows closed--the smell was still coming in

Yeah, can't help wondering whose car it was...and today, I'm surprised they didn't haul it away unless they are keeping it there for "evidence"??

I have seen many fires and they are amazing to watch but at the same time you feel for the people who own the property burning. Thankfully nothing crazy in my neighborhood this not so lovely friday its been storming. I normally love storms but it knocked power out to my hubbys work thus keeping him late at work.

Yup--just relaxing...Feel sorry for the supers in the next building where the fire took place on their part of the block...they're STILL shoveling up all the garbage all over the place since the plastic garbage bags naturally melted from the fire..so now there's a real nice mess out there to clean up

I can imagine how heart-stopping that must have been, pyewacket! I experienced a similar situation many years ago, only we were driving down the street when another car burst into flames. It was frightening, to say the least. In this case it also took the firemen a very long time to put out the fire. I think that always happens with car fires.

Yeah, it did seem that it took the firemen ages to put that car fire out..was out today and was able to get a close up look...only the front part of the car was burnt but the back of it was all right...can you believe it? There was a large box of corn flake brand cereal on the back seat, and untouched by the fire

I was never so scared in my life when the building attached to mine was on fire, we had to get out immediately and get all our cats out. Fortunately the inferno did set our place on fire but the smell in the house was so bad we couldn't live in it for two days, if we were normal people but we did we toughed it out. It was horrible.

Holy Moly you did have an exciting day!
My was boaring compared to yours.
I did my errands with my driver, but the day started with getting up at 4:30 by Abagail hungry. I got up and started laundry. It was going to get up to 77degree F so I wanted to get clothes on the line. I did four loads of laundry and hung them on the line.
I cleaned the kitchen. All before 10am.
I then had to take some stuff to mom. Oh joy! Mom needs new clothes and I do not know where I am going to get the money got buy them. Mom has very little money so I will get a dress for her a month.
Mom wants so much stuff I cannot stand it. She is like a kid.
Then my drive and I went and picked up two firends and we all went down the road to a small town to a new cafe for lunch. Let me tell you we will not be going there again. Then we did a little shopping. I found some three inch stuffed bunnies that look like bunny peeps. They look like the candy peeps. There was four in the box and they where marked 4 dollars. I have a friend who has a baby so I will be giving one to the baby and a few to petie. He loves the little toys. He does not chew up his toys.

Didn't sound like you had much fun with your mother, nor at that new cafe...must have been really bad, no? Do your kitties like to play with toys like that or only Petie?

Thankfully no one was hurt as fire can be very dangerous. I have experienced my car going up in flames at a pertol station forecourt with myself and children inside. I managed to get it off the forecourt and out onto the main road and myself and the children out before it became engulfed in flames. That day I managed to stop the traffic make front page and pull one of the fireman, unintentionally, it was very scary though but I knew I had to get away from pumps to save everything from going up. In my neighbourhood where I used to live I was awkoken by the police and they evacuated the builing as their was an armed man on the roof. It was 5am before we were allowed back home and I was only in a dressing gown and my baby in a nappy. The guy got off due to his mental state after causing over £20,000 worth of damage to the building and he started throwing tiles off the roof which damaged many cars including police cars. It was also late December and very cold. Tonight though so far here it has been an uneventful friday night and I really hope it stays that way. Ellie :D

The car was from an electrical fault of some sort. The reason the police got everyone out was they were sending an armed response unit in (police aren't harmed here in UK) and fire brigade after to maske sure everything was safe as he had already broken into one flat and gone through the attics to get to roof. They moved out a distance away. Ellie :D

That must have been a bit frightening but exciting all at the same time, I would have been glued to the window I expect and my kids! I have never witnessed anything like that, where I live is a really quiet area and so not much like that happens, I do not mind quiet though I must admit!

I live on an Island called Bermuda which is about 22 square miles long. about 2years ago, we had one of the biggest fires in Bermuda's history. Bermuda has one main location where all the trash is dumped. It is in the center of two main roads, (top and bottom). The bottom road has houses on it and the top has trees. Well the dump caught fire, (not quite sure how), the trees caught fire and some of the houses caught fire. It took the Bermuda fire department 3 days to put out the red fire and a week to clear out the smoke. The dump is located near the City of Hamilon. And in the city, there are many houses and shops there. Many of them including my house,
were smoked out for about 2 weeks. The worst part is trying to get that smoke smell out of your house. The dump is still operational and everything is back to normal again. YEAH

Oh how terrible..funny never heard about this fire, as things like that get attention in the news no matter where one is--like hearing all those fires in California just last year, and even much of Greece was all up in flames
