o.k I think I found it I was wrong with My first thought of yeast it is in fact folate.. This is what I found The Australian icon has been deemed illegal in the US due to the classification of an ingredient. Because Vegemite contains added folate, which is now only allowed in breads and cereals, officials have began confiscating jars at the border. It was about October last year I heard about it. I remember hearing a joke made about it on the Hamish and Andy show and then on the News....

Maybe its because Vegimite is not widely available . . . here in the United Kingdom. What we have here is Marmite, which I understand is similar. I remember the pop group Men at Work . . . they sung about Vegimite, some time ago !!! I think you can buy Vegimite in some specialist shops in London, usually these stores are supported by folk from Down Under. There are lots of folk from down under in London, seems to very popular with Aussies "on their world trips".

i love it too. i guess some dont like its strong taste. yes there was something on the news about it being banned in USA, something to do with the folate in it if i recall (though my memory is crappy lol) dont know if they went thru with banning it though. i sometimes even enjoy a lil vegemite on my toast when i have poached eggs... i guess not everyone is a happy little vegemite ;)
