I use both Gmail and yahoo for most of my emails activities and I think both were good mails provider.I use yahoo most of the times as I have yahoo mail before Gmail and thus most of my contacts were still there:)

I think for instant messaging it is way easier to use aol instant messenger. I don't have an actual aol account though because I think that their internet service is way to expensive considering the things that they offer.
