Have you ever been too scared to go to the Dr?

I have found something out and it really shocked me. At work i have been organising courses in men's health and one of the big problems is that males are often reluctant to visit the Dr. Instances of testicular cancer and prostate cancer remain undiagnosed because men are often scared to visit their dr. The end result of this is that men are dying of ignorence. Now, i am asking you to be brave, have you ever not visited the dr when really you should do? can you say why?

It is not males or females. There are certain type of individuals who are reluctant to go to doctors. As a doctor, and especially as a Cancer Specialist, I come across different patients. Most of them come in late stages because of fear and negligence. Some tolerate their disease till they are able to. For some others it is their economic status.
The fear of cancer and cancer treatment is also responsible for delay. It is essential to understand the toxicities of cancer treatment, and that everybody need not suffer from the same.
Any way, I congratulate you for initiating them to visit and take care of themselves.
All the best.

I have never really been scared to go to the doctor but I was always shy to see one. I have not seen a doctor since 1995 though. I have had no need to see one, thank god. We do not have insurance right now either and cannot afford to pay out of pocket. I would force myself to go if I had to though.

Yes, I find man are quite reluctant to go to the doctor even when needed. I have quite a few examples of men close to my that often let things go and go before they actually check them.
I don't know if it's a general male characteristic but I find it in a big majority of men:)
Myself, I usually go for my appointments, and miss them only when I forget - which sometimes , depending on how hectic my life is at the time, is often:).
Has there ever been a time where I dreaded going? Maybe a few. I find that the worse part of it is when we tend to start thinking about the worst case scenario.Specially when we have a general or only slightly detailed information.
I remember my uncle saying that " a little knowledge is a dangerous thing" and as I grew up and matured I kind of agree with him.
Having worked in hospitals and closely with doctors and patients I learned some, but that slight knowledge sometimes is dangerous because I might immediately think about the worst possible reason for my symptoms without remembering that other things might have the same symptoms and that differentiating them needs to be done by a professional:)

ASa woman, i am too anxious 2 go 2 a doctor if i feel something is wrong with me and do the same with my son. I just have 2 go n find it out n get the treatment done. But my husband is just the opposite. First of all he denies that something is wrong, and when it is clear, he makes xcuses saying not this time another time. I sometimes take out the time n ask him to come along, i wanna take him, but still he refuses. I just donno y...i guess ur right, may b hez scared....

I am a woman and I think we tend to realise when something is up and automatcally make an appointment to get it checked out but I have also noticed that men tend not to they brush it off as if the problem is going to suddenly disappear and a great cost to them in some circumstances including the above ones you mentioned. I really don't know why this is though. So all you women out there try to encourage your man to go even if he thinks its nothing you could be saving his life and men if you feel uncomfortable about a change you are experiencing with how you are feeling please go get it checked out. Oh gosh yes. Men are absolutely hopeless when it comes to making a Dr's appointment. My BF won't go unless I literally drag him to the surgery. It isn't ignorance either, they know when something is wrong with their body it is just that they are afraid of admiting that something is wrong.
I don't think I have anything really wrong with me and whenever I do feel down I always go to the doctors.
My BF needs to get himself checked out because he has some real problems with his stomach but he just won't go. And when he is feeling sick he says he is too sick to leave the house. I have threatened that the next time his stomach plays up I am getting an ambulance to come and fetch him, that way he can't not go and get it sorted. He has had this problem for over 20 yrs. Men!!!!!!!!!!

I'd have to say yes i was pretty scared to go to the doctors when i was little becuase i always used to hear these stories about doctors being evil and they used to kill there patients...even though it was a lie to scare small children at that age but thats what kidsdo, they believe this so called human killing doctor story. i never used to like to go to the doctors but once i went a few times i didnt mind going becuase i knew that he was going to make me feel better instead of worse. Its strange though becuase if i havn't of went to the doctors when i was little would i of gone today? it makes people curious to know that doctors can be there to help you when your sick or just need a checkup.... i geuss i was scared of doctors a long time ago but since i started going i dont mind it much anymore.
