Social Networking Sites....A Need?

Where there is the major group of people following the new trend and signing themselves up into social networking sites to stay in touch date etc, there is another group which believes that it is not a necessity to stay in touch in this manner.Emails are enough to do so, send pics etc.What do you think? Is it a need or is it a way to know more people in a wider scale? letting them know about ourselves.Some believe it is not safe.What do u personally feel? What would you tell people who believe otherwise about these sites?

Personally I am not opposed to social sites if they are used properly and as a tool to stay in contact.
It is a marvel to me at my age that I see so many pople using this sort of site as their SOLE means of contact with the wider world.
This is very sad and I see it in my own children.
They will say 'I have just spoken' to such and such but they haven't really, they have tapped a keyboard!
