Anxiety: have you, or has someone you love, ever struggled with this?

I have had several friends who have struggled with various anxiety disorders, and I myself suffer. I take medications, but although they improve the situation, I don't think I've yet found the right dosage, medication, or combination. Does anyone else suffer, or love someone who does? We can discuss medications, means of coping, etc.

Did you try different meds, or anything else, or are you just trying to live with it?

I've struggled with anxiety over the years. It's not as bad now as it was when I was younger, but I still have days when it comes over me. I've never taken any medication for it, but have noticed that since I began writing on a regular basis, it happens less often.

Sounds like you have a good outlet. Maybe I need to start writing. :)

YES, and the only thing that has really worked for them is Paxil but now one of my friends is going to try the natural herb called samE it is suppose to be just as effective as Paxil but it is not conventional synthetic medicine.

Neat! Let me know how it goes. I take an SSNRI, which works on serotonin and norepinephrine, and it HAS seemed to help. THEN I got a bunch of environmental allergies, was diagnosed with asthma, and had to quit exercising (I can start again once the meds are controlling the asthma better) which has left me going back towards pretty bad anxiety issues.

I'm so sorry to hear that! Before I was diagnosed with asthma, I found that the meds + exercise (especially strength training) helped my anxiety A LOT. It's the type of thing anyone can do no matter your fitness level. Maybe even self-defense lessons (or dvds, if you don't want to leave the house) might help as well, considering the specifics of the situation?

My daughter suffers from anxiety. Her doctor recommended she keep a journal and write in it every day, whether she was feeling overwhelmed or not. This has really helped her cope with her anxiety a great deal, as on the bad days she can write what's bothering her and the read about the good days she's had and it helps lift her spirits. She was on medication briefly, but it seemed to have too many adverse side affects and she and her doctor both agreed to try no medication, and she's done well without the meds.

I'm glad she has. How old is she? I know that the meds don't always work right on younger people. I was lucky enough not to experience any side effects.

I did that for most of my life. I don't get panic attacks but I have anxiety in ways that can really "egg on" my depression or in ways that definitely get in the way of living. I didn't want meds either, but I've had no side effects, and my personality hasn't changed, which were two of my main concerns.

it takes more than just medication to get releif. It needs lot of understanding and people to talk. You can always mail me at exodamusking@gmail.com.

Thank you for the concern and kind offer :) I feel like I have people who will listen but no one in my life who understands. I have considered therapy but don't know where I'd fit it in!

Hello Mandakat I have had Panic Anxiety Disorder for over 10 years now. Since moving to another state my new doctor put me on Lexapro. WOW ..what a difference and the panic attacks stopped completely. I have been in therapy for it as well to find the cause (which was a previous abusive marriage) it helped some but the medication is what helped the most. Don't stop trying to find what works for you ...everyone deserves to live a normal life. Take Care

Thanks for sharing :) I've only ever tried one medication (my current one) and it's ... so-so. I think my doc thinks I'm just a sweet kid who just needs to "buck up." At first he told me it was probably Seasonal Affective Disorder... now he's telling me to "go make more friends and chat with the girls." I find it difficult to properly communicate how I feel, partly because of the anxiety. I'm glad you have found something that really helps though :) It gives me hope that eventually, I will too!

Hi Mandakat well Anxiety is really a pshycological problem that a person face. But you don't need to worry because medicines or other things are not going to solve this problem. All you need is just relax and do whatever you do with full concentration and focus. Also you can do some pranayam (Yoga) to get rid of this problem.

Well, I appreciate your input, but an anxiety disorder isn't just a psychological problem, it's a chemical imbalance. Although calming, relaxing techniques can help, they don't do anything to make sure that the brain is releasing the right chemicals in the right doses at the right times. A disorder isn't the same type of anxiety that everyone else gets, unfortunately.

I have dealt with anxiety all my life most do to post traumatic stress... When an anxiety attack hits. I find focusing on a place that I feel more comfortable with and using controlled breathing or pranic breathing helps force me to calm down, so I can avoid a panick attack or come out of one faster... Most I know who have learned it learned to manage and avoid panick attacks this way meds helped me be calmer, but they did not help me avoid it. - DNatureofDTrain
