I have joined a group last year entitled 30 Books a Year. And it has been my goal since then to read 30 books by the end of the year. Unfortunately, I barely reached 20, because I have been so busy with my schoolwork, that I haven't found time to read any book.
Now, as the new year start, I made it my new year's resolution to read 30 books by the end of this year. But so far, I've read none. hehe. I'm looking forward to reading a lot this summer.
How about you? How many books have you read so far this year?

I used to read so many more books but that isn't the case now. Right now I think since the beginning of the year I've read 5 books. Might be more but I think that's right. I used to read five books a week. Oh well life happens and we just have to keep on going.

Well I'm a very fast reader when it comes to books of pleasure. Text books are totally different I can read usually between a 100 and 150 pages in an hour. Many of the books I read were between 300 and 500 pages so a few hours worth of reading.

I just counted and it came to 22. I know last year I read over 100 books, I generally read 2 in a week.
When I was studying I only read set text books but now I read for pleasure and entertainment and can read whatever I want.

Wow, you've already read 22 books for the past 3 months? And 100 books last year? You must be a very big fan of books, I'm sure my goal of 30 books a year sounds lame to you.
Maybe you have a lot of time in your hands? Especially between mylotting and schoolwork, I can't seem to get anything else done.

I have read 4 or 5 books already this year. I have started the Left Behind series and can't seem to put it down once I start one.

Does this goal just include fiction, I know some people only prefer fiction but me I prefer non-fiction but actually made it my goal to read more fiction so I picked up a Anny Tyler book, a book called Brainchild, one called Prodigy because I love this kind of stuff, and Bad Heir Day, I definately want to read The Mommy Fund.
Anyways, if your allowed to read nonfiction try:
The Know-It All by A.J. Jacobs ,
he's a writer for NPR, Esquire and The New York Magazine (countless others) and Im finding it hilarious. The story is about him deciding to read the encyclopedia from A to Z and he weaves all the tidbits of info into his life and his quest to match to his dads success which is proving impossible and his brother-n-law a Harvard grad, smart aleck, who never ceases to show whos boss. I love it because Im actually learning stuff and reading a really good story that I can certainly relate too, the parts where he trys throwing his knowledge out there at cocktail parties was so funny.
How To Talk About Books You Haven't Read
by Pierre Bayard
This one I found really entertaining and requested it from my library after reading two chapters at Barnes and Nobles. Here's a review clip from BarnesandNoble.com:
"If civilized people are expected to have read all important works of literature, and thousand books are published each year, what are we supposed to do in those awkward social situations in which we're forced to talk about books we haven't read?........literature professor and psychoanalyst Pierre Bayard argues that its actually more important to know a books role in our collective library than its details.....he describes the many varieties of 'non-reading' and the horrible sticky situations that might confront us, and then offers advice on what to do while using examples from writers like Umberto Eco, Graham Greene, Oscar Wilde and even uses the movie Groundhog Day.."
It was a fun read.

No, the general goal doesn't only include fiction. But maybe for me it is, because I'm into fiction more than non-fiction. And most books I've read are fiction.
Maybe it's about time to start reading non-fiction. I'll try your recommendations. Thank you.

Im sure its mutual so I don't want to mess it up for you by recommending a book that would mess up your chances of ever reading nonfiction--I would feel responsible.

Isn't that disappointing.
I have read one for my English course and the other one was a childrens books, because I saw it on my boyfriend's bookshelf and remember loving it when I had read it in the past.
I will pick up my reading once exams are over.
I was once a member of a 52 books a year community, which means that I had to read one book a week. I stuck with that for about 6 months and then exam time came around again.

It isn't that hard, it all depends on the book you are reading. If you read thick 1000 page war and peace style books then it will be hard, but if you read chick lit with 3000/400 pages, it is doable.

I have been keeping track of the books I read ever since grade 7, about 33 years. The number of books I read a year has varied throughout the years. When I was commuting by bus to work I read a lot of books. 55 is the highest number I have read in a year (my year end is February 18th, not December 31st). Last year I may have managed 10 (it's on diskette and I haven't printed it out yet so I don't know off hand). Since February 18th this year I have read about 3. Two years I read as many as 55 books. The lowest was 1996/1997 when I only read 7. I gave birth to my second daughter in August of 1996 and developed Fibromyalgia after, along with a colicky baby. So these contributed to my low number that year. In recent years I have been focusing on writing rather than reading so my numbers remain in the teens. I don't think I'll ever see 55 in one year again.

I started off by writing them in a school notebook. Then when I got a computer I transferred it all onto diskette. I lost my last diskette and had to guesstimate a couple of books that were missing since the last print-out. I keep the print-out with me so that when I am at the library or book store I know which books I have and haven't read. There's about 800 of them over 33 years. Really, that's not a lot when you think about it.

Well, after last year I am glad to say I've rediscovered my zest for reading. Last year I had no motivation to read more than usual because of eye problems and migraines. This year I seem to want to read more things than ever, and on different subjects. I've read about ten so far, but it helps that I don't sleep too much. I've always had an insomnia problem, so I get about 4 hours on a good night. So I have a little extra time for reading. Right now I'm reading Storm Warning, a book about the Oklahoma tornadoes on May 3, 1999, that recorded the biggest tornado ever. I don't know if I should be reading that right now considering I live in Oklahoma and right now, I'm under a tornado watch. But just a watch. : )

It's good to know that you do not have eye problems anymore and that you can return to reading. You must have craved reading so much that's why you'll read practically anything nowadays. ^__^
It must be pretty scary to read that book considering you are in that situation right now. I hope it wouldn't turn out that way in real life. Goodluck. I would never be courageous enough to read a book that is freakishly coincidental. hehe.

I have read around 200 books. I try to read at least 24 books a year i.e two books a month. But so far I have exceeded the target easily. But I may not be able to do this always. One day I may need to slow down. But as long as I can do it I shall continue to do... the toughest part however is in purchasing all the books I want.

That's true. There are times when you want to read books but can't find anything good to read within grasp, it's just a waste of appetite. And there are times too that I don't feel like reading, but when I find good books I suddenly feel the urge to sit down and read. hehe.

So far this year I've only read a half of a book. I love too read. But I'm a single mother and I don't have too much free time to read anymore. I'm a member of a book club and I just recently bought about 10 books from them, but I don't know when I will get a chance to read them. It would be great if I can read all of them this year. I also read magazines and so far this year I have read about five.

I have read two so far this year. I don't get as much reading time as I would like. I used to have a goal each year to read 25 books a year. That was roughly 2 per month and I achieved it for about 4 years running. But then I had a child...................
enough said.

Yeah, children need constant attention, it's so dangerous to leave child unattended even for a while. But that's really sad that you can't reach your goal this time. Maybe when your child starts schooling, maybe you'll have time to read again. Goodluck.

Thank you.
I love going to the library too. Especially when I was in high school. I spent a lot of my free time there. And I've read a lot of books. But when I stepped college, I haven't borrowed a single book from the library. It's so sad not being able to hang out in a library anymore. Our university library was a closed shelf type of library, and I hated it. Because we have to know the title of the book, or the author in order to borrow the book. I wanted to browse books that picks my interest. That's why I miss hanging out in the library.

My goal is to read one or two books per week, that is 4-8 books a month. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to do it for some reasons. I've finished 6 books up to this date. =( I started reading 2 books and 1 ebook, the bookmarks are still on the same page. :D I think I'll get back to this topic on December. I'll update you. :D

Maybe my answer is none. I only read the books about qualification exam that is useful to my job and help me get more earnings. Generally speaking, people in china is more likely to read some books of specialized knowledge but not of the life or theory .This is partly before of the differernt culture and customs between every nations. IN china, a certificate of certain aspect represents your ability to persue in that line.

In my opinion , I don't completely agree with your thought.Maybe many people all over the world tends to read the professional books to increase their specialize knowledge and take the professional exam, as is the case in china. Every nations have a different culture. Compared with China, the western world puts emphasis on developing the people's theory and minds . It is reported that some western people are likely to read the books about theories like The Theory of Makesi and so on.

Thanks to my scheduled exams this year.. I had to give up all the books and had to go on a date with my beloved texts books. Now you cannot consider them under the books you referring to cos i do not read them completely. But still, I managed to have time for four books.
1) Bourne Supremacy- Robert Ludlum
2) Deathly Hallows- JK Rowling
3) Apple MacBook's Manual
4) Doomsday Conspiracy- Sydney Sheldon

Well, I'm always the first to admit that I really have No Life. I think I've read about 20 or so books so far this year. And that's actually low for me. When I was younger it was like pulling teeth for me to finish ONE book, then I got sick & had to be home-schooled for a year, & I started reading just to escape from my life. I was to the point that I was taking out 30 books at a time. And I'd read them all with renewing them twice. So I think that's about... 9 weeks? So yeah! I've actually slowed down quite a bit.
