Well, i think most of the people use Pen Drive nowadays, to share our data to others etc.. But, do you use the Safely Remove Hardware button to plug out your PenDrive or Flash Drive,,, Well i don't and i think its just a waste of time as if we want some quick data transfer then why we have to wait to plug out by clicking Safely Remove button everytime... Share your thoughts... Cheers!!!

I do not have a safely remove button on my pen drive. I wait until the data or the music or graphics have already been put on the portable disk. That is indicated by the light no longer flashing Then I remove it. I do not share my data with others, since this is just for me. I have to find where the Safely Remove Hardware button is, but my pen drive does not have one. I will have to check on the net.

yup, thats also something a better option if our pendrive have a LED funtion which shows us whether its been use by computer or not, and if its continuously showing your led glows, then it might be something which is using DATA transfer, and then i probably do wait for completting data transfer then i remove my pendrive... Have Fun!!!

Wow mnsrwt so many responses to read! I believe there is a grave misconception here with regards to SRH. Many over looked its main purpose. Pen drive are designed to be rigid and practically immune to abuse. "Safely Remove Hardware" is actually for your DATA. It ensures all files in it are properly closed/copied/deleted/moved, that is why there are instances of "Drive cannot be remove right now, try again at a later time" or something.

yup, i also think that if i use any data transfer then i must let it go and then remove my pendrive directly, and you are right that SRH is actually for DATA purpose, i wonder most of the mylotter know about this issue, but anyways atleast they do have some knowledge about Pendrive after reading this discusssion...

I always use the "Safely Remove Hradware" option because I was taught to use it and i think it's safer than just pulling the pen drive out. However, there are some times that it just keeps giving the message that it cannot be removed at the moment. Those times, I either leave the pen drive in for a while, or pull it out when I'm in a hurry.

yeah, i also messed up with these sloppy error messages when i try to pull out my pendrive using that function, and i thought it just about a virus activity in your computer, which just keeps your pendrive busy so computer gives you that error message...

Ahan!!! its better to read the property of your hardware, i think in my Windows XP, its clearly stated that you can remove your pendrive with quick optimization or you can say quick removal without using the safe removal icon. Thanks for being here...

Sure I do. I backup date to my thumb drive from time to time and I always use the safely remove hardware command. I wouldn't want to spoil either of the drives, you know?

Wow. I read #37. I didn't know that. But is this step eliminating good? As in, it doesn't spoil it in anyway? Then why on earth would anyone want to introduce the necessary step? And why would this be the default?

I must confess that I do not usually bother with the Safely Remove Hardware icon, although I am aware that I should. It is quite possible to cause damage to the Flash drive and also data could be lost or corrupted.

yeah, i do agree with you that data would be corrupted if you don't remove it safely but that could happen only when your pendrive is in use by some other task whether reading or writing... And if i am reading/writing some data from my pendrive then i also recommend to safely remove your pendrive... Keep posting!!!

what the heck, if you are in a hurry and lazy, you don't have time and inclinatioin to do the process of safely removing the pendrive from you computer. i personally don't do it most of the time. it all depends on the circumstance. if i had a lot of time in my hands and i could do it, then yes, i would. But if i was in a rush to go to school and i needed something important from my computer like some data or something, i would just plug in my pen drive and get the necessary data from my computer and into the pen drive. after the data transer, i would quickly remove the freakin' pen drive from my computer and just run as fast as i can go school. this is me, and i don't want other to follow what i am doing. although, quickly removing the pen drive from my computer has never hurt my computer no matter how many times i do it.

No dear dn't do that. You are spoiling your own gadgets. Oneday even your comp can fail. It will surely spoil the pendrive youuse. It may not last for long and the memory might be spoilt. Why should you do such things? It is for the good of the computer and other devices, these methods are adbised don't youthink so. You might lose just half a minute maybe but if something happens to the comp then...

Heck, i don't have such time and its been shown in the windows xp that its been use for quick removal not for safe removal...lol You can check your hardware settings to see whether your pendrive supports quick removal or its recommend to safely remove all time... For that you have to goto the pendrive properties then check for the same... Keep posting!!!

I sometimes use SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE but if i am in a rush, or cant be bothered i just pull it out! It doesnt really make a difference, has anyone actually had their pen drive break on them and the reason was defo because they didnt use that option? Chris :)

This is a fair point. I know that damage to either the drive or data can result from not using the correct proceedure, but I know many people who like myself do not bother and have never known a single issue where someone has had a problem.

Yes, I Do.. I follow that procedure cos it prevents the flash drive from getting corrupted. YOu see whenever a flash drive is plugged in, a set of drivers from the OS's system folder keep interacting with it. If you abruptly removing the Flash Drive without following the procedure, there are fair chances that the drive might get corrupted and all the data on it is lost. And considering the instability of Windows, I always follow that procedure. Many fail to notice that whenever a flash drive is inserted, it detects the type and installs some extra software, there drivers interact. If you remove it without using the " SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE" option, there are chances that the drivers might get corrupted also, and the next time you insert a flash drive, would lead to the termination of the process. Imagine this . You are really in a hurry, and just pull out ur pen drive. You go to some place where you are supposed to share that data and upon using it again you find that the data is not there .. and the pen drive is acting weird. I bet you'll most probably hear urself saying. " Stupid Pen Drive" " Idiotic System" . Then you would curse urself for not waiting for just 5 secs before the system could remove the Pen Drive. Please follow the procedure, and avoid curses flying aaround.. we already have many.

Hi, Bourne!!! Well, i can predict that you have a good knowledge about Operatin System Subject, and you are aware about the system files which loaded into the memory, but i think the only data reside in memory from harddisk, not from PenDrive, and i don't think that there's any driver which is loaded into the pendrive when we insert our USB to our system,,, thats the only reason i plugged out my pendrive without using that Safely remove tab...

Well , I never said there are drivers installed in the Pendrive. I meant to say that when a Pendrive is inserted, windows detects it and installs some extra software, on the windows. So these drivers keep interacting with the files in the pendrive. And the removal like what you said will cause problems to those drivers and considering the instability of windows OS, I, on a personal note feel that its better to stick with rules where I have to. thanks bourne

yes. i always do that cause i think it will damage the pendrive if i dont remove it safely. you might still be lucky right now but it might pose some problems in the long run. my officemate's pen drive at one time kind of flamed up one time and we saw her pen drive with smoke already he he its good her pc was not damaged with the pen drive.

I try to use the safely remove hardware button but occasionally i get in a rush and forget. I make a point of using it if its not my drive..or if its my 80 gb drive...the smaller 128mb or 512mb drives i'm not as fussy about.
