Why the Goalkeeper's Number is NO. One?

As we know, each soccer player has their own number, for example, the striker always gets NO.9, but I want to know why the does the goalkeeper usually choose NO.1?

The goalkeeper does not CHOOSE number 1 as the numbers date back to the original team formations of a goalkeeper number 1, with two full backs in front of him, numbers 2 and 3. In front of the backs were three mid fielders, numbers 4, 5 and 6.
Finally up front were five forwards,right wing, left wing, inside right, inside left and center forward. These were numbered 7,8,9,10,and 11.
Strikers used to wear the number shirt which goes back to the center forward who was normally the top scorer.
