I'm not sure I do. It's something we are taught as children so grow up believing in it. I just don't get the concept. If you're good you go to heaven, if your bad you go to hell. so define good and bad in terms of religion? I consider myself to be a good person. I haven't ever murdered anyone (although there are times I've wanted to lol) and I believe in a higher power. I live my life with love in my heart, but according to some religions, I may still not be good enough to get in to heaven. Islam preaches that you will get in to heaven if you kill infidels! So, yeah I'm confused. I don't know what happens when you die, maybe nothing, maybe your spirit goes somewhere or your re-incarnated. What do you think?

Hi Cat,
Yes I do believe in heaven and hell. The Bible speaks very clearly about both places and they are very real places.
Jesus spoke of hell being the place of eternal torment, gnashing of teeth, being totally separated from God for all eternity.
It is not God's will for one single person to perish. He made a way for us to live forever with Him in heaven and that is thru His Son Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ was totally perfect. He was totally without sin. He was/is the Son of the living God. He came into this fallen world to die for our sins. He came to save us. His gift of salvation is free to all who accept Him.
The only way to heaven is thru Jesus Christ. We must repent of our sins and give our lives to Jesus. He will cleanse us of all our sins and our sindebt will be paid in full!
We can never be good enough to get into heaven nor can we do enough good works to get there. It is only by what Jesus Christ did for us! It only takes one sin to keep us from God and Jesus Christ paid the price. He loves us and wants us to come to know Him and be saved.
May God bless you!

Catjane, what someone taught you as a child has apparantly surfaced now that you're an adult. What were you taught about Heaven and Hell? Heaven is a good place and Hell is bad? It's just about that simple. The problem with "religion" is that it waters down the relationship that you should have with Jesus Christ. It's not about religion at all, its about a relationship. Killing someone will not get you to Heaven and how come when someone gets re-incarnated its never as something bad, always as something great? Don't rely on what you know to get you to a decision, you can rationalize Jesus to a person who lived long ago and his teachings are outdated, see, I just dated him and pushed him aside. Think about your life and what has happened and how some things are just unexplained, that's called faith, good people won't make it to Heaven, you must be born again, I won't quote scripture, you know the verses that will lead you. Talk to a pastor or seek a friend that you know is a Christian, we love to give our testimony, its our way of proving that Jesus saved us and he can save you too. God Bless and I will pray for you, and I'm not just saying that.

I believe in Heaven and Hell. You go to Heaven if you are a child of God, and if you are not, you go to Hell. To be a child of God, you have to believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God, and you follow HIS teachings because God has chosen you from the beginning of time. You were born into his kingdom is another way of putting it. So you automatically become a child of God and the way you know is that you have a desire to read the Bible and feel guilty about things a lot of people would not and then when you are made a member of the true Church, one that preaches the gospel and not one that concentrates of good works but one that says by faith you are saved.
With Hell, everyone else goes to Hell, but there might be different degrees. It says in the Bible, about those who will be punished with few stripes, and those with many. Sorry there is no other way to put it. I have unsaved relatives and a husband that I wish were saved and it hurts.

Yes I believe in both. Heaven was meant for us to live with God in our afterlife but just being good doesn't get you there. Hell was created for Satan and his demons, not for us but if we reject God we will go there too. No I do not believe in re-incarnation.
You said you believe in a higher power. Just who is that? Do you believe in the Creator of all things? Or just in a higher power?
What I am saying is that you need to ask God to reveal himself to you and then the rest of the questions will follow and get answered as you find the real truth.

I say "higher power" because it means a God, what I consider to be my God. Everyone has an idea who God is. Every religion celebrates "God" in their own way. I have my way and my God. It's not necessarily a biblical "God" or a he/she type of thing, even though God has been spoken of as "father" making him/her/it an actual gender. Why would something with all that power be a man? Back when the bible was written, it was a mans world, dominated by men. What self righteous man back then would conjure up a woman God and write about her? How do we know God is a man, except for what the bible tells us. Are we to believe all that the bible tells us, even now in the 21st century? I'm not sure I do. I just know I believe something made all this and whatever it was it had to be very powerful, higher than anything on earth.

I understand your confusion, catjane, and I might be able to clear a tiny part of it up for you. First off, we don't go to heaven because we're good. If you believe in the Bible you know that we are "saved" by grace, and not by "works." We can be good and do all the good works in the world but that will not save us. I often think of the example of the two thieves who were crucified along with Christ. When He told the one that he would be with Him in heaven, that is an example of grace. Hope this clears it up a bit for you.

If God is Love, Hell could not exist. How could a God of love condemn anyone to Hell? I believe in reincarnation or life after life. Heaven would get very boring after a couple of thousand of years of sitting on a cloud. On the other hand Life on Earth is so exciting nobody wants to quit. We love it! so lets do it again, and again!

If you are in heaven you would never want to leave the place. If you are loving and kind to all humanbeings in earth, then you'll not want to leave here. You have that many people loving you and even GOD will cme to be with you. Then what is the point of going to the heaven when you can have everything here itself. Don't you think so?

No because I believe that Heaven and Hell are all in a person's head, and that Heaven and Hell are right here on Earth. If you think that your life is Hell, then you are living in Hell. If you think that your life is great, then you are living in Heaven. If you think that your mind is in a pit of dispair, then you are in Hell. If you believe that your mind is in euphoric bliss, then you are in Heaven. It is all in the mind. Heaven and Hell are whatever you want them to be and however you make it. My heaven is being with my boyfriend, playing Magic the Gathering, and then making sweet love afterwards. My Hell is everyone in my family dying at once and losing my boyfriend.

Heaven and hell are as per their own Ideas like you say. But what we do in this life also creates heaven or hell in this life itself.
If you are a basically happy person and create heaven for others, then you'll also be in heaven and if you do the opposite you'll be in hell here itself. This is what I believe.

Well, it depends on how one defines heaven or hell. As a Christian I define heaven as the dwelling place of God. And since I believe in God I believe in heaven too. And hell defined as the place where people who refused to be moral or rather chooses the dehumanized form decided to reside, and therefore I believe in hell too provided it understood in such manner.

As a Baha'i, I believe that Heaven and Hell are not literal places but rather spiritual states. You can experience both to a certain extent while on earth and when you move on to the next world you leave your body and therefore your spirit is able to experience more extreme versions of each. It is more of a spectrum though and you can move throughout the spectrum after you leave this world. I do not believe that some go to heaven and some to hell and that is it. I believe that all of us will continue to progress spiritually in this world and in the next world/s until we attain eternal bliss which I supose could be refered to as heaven.

I do believe in Heaven and hell, but not only because i was taught to, but also because i have a close relationship with the Lord. I am a Christian and a firm believer that once you die you either go to Heaven or hell. To determine who goes,in my beliefs, are the ones that have accepted Jesus Christ in their hearts. It says that anyone that comes to Him will have everlasting life with Him throughout eternity, but those that do not accept Him will not make it to Heaven. That is my belief. God bless

I do. I believe in the Bible and it clearly states the existence of heaven and hell. The bible also tells us how to keep out of hell. It is through The Lord JESUS CHRIST and not through our good deed!!

Heaven and hell I would believe to be temporary places for reward and punishment purposes. Both would have no meaning in terms of the permanent or the infinite. Heaven and hell for me are states of mind that people have while living here on earth. For heaven and hell to exist on a permanent basis does not compute. 1 lifetime cannot equal eternity in any one of those places or states. I would rather accept the Buddhist/Hindu notion of rebirth, of life being a process of learning about Being.

The White is not always White.
Even Lucifer once an Archangel of God, can turn into a Fallen Angel. Now what is good, what is bad?
God has two concepts.
One, God is creator of whole universe, also created Heaven and Hell.
Two, God is the King of Heaven. Doesn't it sounds crippled, God chose for one side.

God is beyond qualification or description. Good and Bad are relative terms and could not apply to god if he is to be god. If god is everything then he has to be both good and bad otherwise if he is only good then where would bad go? If there is a place or a state where there is no god then god is not everywhere which negates the very concept of god. I believe is is crippled to only want good and to run away from bad. They are both a part of life and are relative to a person's state of mind.

well, heaven is what we look up to every day, and hell in the bible was actually supposed to mean the grave. so if you use them in literal terms than yes they are real, they are in front of our eyes. but in the fairy tale veiw, i dont think they are real. I dont think that if there was a god that created us knowingly (what i mean by this is if he is a consious being) I dont think he will condemn as many people as the church and others trys to let out. I think a god that created us would want us to use our mind instead of follow words written by another man. I think that as long as I live my life to the fullest and follow my heart and mind that he would never send me to a place called hell. Now my beliefs on the afterlife are very vauge b/c there is no way for us to really know what goes on unless a ghost tells us. LOL i do believe in ghost, to a point, i also believe there are many kinds of ghosts. I do believe in reincarnation, but thats because of little things like my cousins son asking my mom if she remembers when he swung her while my mom was swinging him at about 3 years old. I believe in the gaining full enlightenment (and if not for religious purposes, just for knowledge reasons) I dont know what happens to people after they finish reincarnating. I believe that Aliens could of came down here a long time ago and thats how the idea of god, and the angels came to veiw. thank about in that time period where people already looked at extrodnary people as gods, would look at a race that came from the heavens as angels, and there leader was god. I'm not to teribally sure about all this, but these are my theorys. I more lean towards proven stuff though.

im a firm beleiver in reincarnation. the only advice i can offer you is to seek the answers youre looking for within yourself. your heart knows, if you can learn to listen to it, and the Powers that Be speak softly.. youve got to listen to hear Them. forget societies teachings, and things written in books, and anything others TELL you to feel and beleive. search your soul.. and itll lead you where you as an individual needs to be. regardless of what faith you choose, or what god draws you. if youre true to yerself, you cant go wrong.

Great topic Catjane, and it looks like you have gotten a wide array of ideas.
First, let me say, that there is a Truth to be had, and one must rely on faith and communication with God to find it. You are not going to receive your answers from worldly knowledge. You MUST go to the father and ask him to reveal it to you. Jesus told us us that all who ask will receive. This message wasn't about gaining things, it was about wisdom. Go to the father, with faith he will provide, and ask, He will show you what is truth and what is lies.
I personally believe in Heaven, Hell, and Earth. Revelation clearly state that not all will make it to heaven. We are even given a number, 144,000(I think)that's not very many. Jesus also told us that many will say "Lord, Lord" but he will not hear them. This is where your heart comes in. If you are in it for the glory, and the rewards, you're not in it for him, and he will not recognize you when you go to him. Jesus holds the keys to the kingdom, he is the only way to enter.
As for hell, I'm still not certain about it. I do believe it exists, but I'm not sure I believe it will exist forever. Again in Revelations we are told that all as we know it will pass away. After the final fight, Satan and his followers will be destroyed forever. That means they will be gone, as people today understand hell, it is a place of eternity. If Jesus will destroy satan and his followers, then hell will go with them.
As for the earth, this is a fairly new concept for me, and one I am struggling with to determine its truthfulness. I have spent a great deal of my time searching and researching religions. Many sound good, but few are very close to the truth. There are several scriptures that refer to life continuing on earth. There are also several scriptures that refer to the world being destroyed. Does that mean they are contradicting each other? I don't think so, but I believe both could be true. That in the end of this world, it will be destroyed, but a new one created just like it. And all those who don't make it to heaven, will live on earth. Kind of like a new beginning, maybe that's where the idea of reincarnation comes from. Maybe it has already happened several times, and each time a new angel falls and a new satan is born, and it all continues over and over again. That could explain why scientists' findings contradict bible teaching when it comes to the age of the earth and the universe.

I personally believe that while heaven and hell might well be made up by our ancestors and form a central part of our religious doctrines to ensure that we do not end up destroying ourselves and live by a certain code where everyone is happy, they are very much subject to personal interpretation. We may not know what happens to us after we leave the physical world, but if there was a heaven, i imagine that it would be a state where we are happy with the way we led our lives while on earth and hell would be our conscience forever pricking us for all our mistakes and wrongdoings. And when it comes to being good enough to go to heaven i think it shouldn't bother us that we are considered to be "not good enough" by someone else's standards. If anything i'm sure it is much more important that we are happy with the way we are going and make sure that we go about our lives with the best of intentions, both with ourselves in mind and others. A strict personal moral code is all that's necessary here, and not a religious code as such. And one thing i'd like to clarify here is that islam( no i am not islamic), does not anywhere in its doctrine preach that you get into heaven by killing infidels. This is as a result of bad media and wrong interpretation by islamic radicals and others. What it infact did say was that when an enemy invades your land, do not give up, but fight them. And it is in this context that it is said "kill the infidels wherever you find them" . This is not to be confused with "go forth and kill all the infidels".
