given the population of china itself, i would say mandarin can possibly be on par with english or slightly below. i wouldnt' use recognize but i would say that ALOT of people can speak mandarin.

I remember looking this up one time. I think Chinese, then Hindi and Bengali. Spanish is up there, too.

that's a hard one.
probably spanish for daily/business use,but chinese by number of speakers.
