Sometimes when I am doing any manual work I listen just to the music alone.. I don't notice the lyrics that time.. It helps to keep thoughts away from the repetitive nature of the job.. Other times I pay attention to the words and sing along..

I listen to music for the lyrics and the tune from the guitars and drums etc... And of course the energy that a song can make you feel while it is playing.

Music is a way of expression of feelings. both for the composer and for the listener. Sometimes the words do it, sometimes the background music does it.
I always listen to the lyrics, cos they are the ones that usually express the thoughts of the one who is singing the song. esp rock and rock n roll, but I listen to Hip-Hop and Pop when I'm feeling happy and shake a leg with the beat.
