I have mentioned several times that I help with a local animal rescue group. I thought I would share another way of helping you may not have thought of. I crochet, mind you, nothing fancy. People will bring me their scrap yarn and I used it to make blankets for the animals cages. They don't care if it one color or seven colors. It's something soft and warm for them to snuggle on. While you are at it, don't throw out that old towel. Donate it to an animal rescue group for bedding also. Save those old blankets too. Even old hand towels and dish rags. Those can be used to clean cages with.

You are right Jairgirl. Rugs are great too for bedding. The little toilet lid covers make great bedding for the kitties too. The big rugs are great in the kennels for the dogs.

For anyone reading: please check your local rescue group or shelter what they need before you donate. Some rescues want newspapers for cat bedding or to return in for recycling $$ and some don't use them and turn them away and then people feel bad. Some want blankets that they are able to wash - so anything too ratty - they do not want because they will not hold up.. Some will take anything in any condition except soiled. If they are clean, but just ripped - that may be okay. With crochet blankets - another good idea is to make them, and sell them, and donate the proceeds to the group. Check with the shelter before donating crochet to lay on. I am not saying shelter pets don't deserve something nice but crochet is not always safe for animals - sometimes they can get a nail or a claw, or tooth stuck in a granny square or a loop and it can cause distress to the animal, especially if they were not a house pet before, and especially if there is not staff their 24 hours a day looking out for them.

Bravo Houndsgood. The LAW has a lady that makes two quilts representing the two state colleges and a dog quilt and a cat quilt that they raffle off each year. Also, save those packing peanuts. Occasionally the LAW would take in a cat that had been burned. They couldn't use regular kitty litter because of the burnt paws. They would use the styrofoam peanuts instead.

Those are great suggestions! Families with kids that are growing up fast usually have a ton of old baby blankets. I know I did. Giving them to an animal shelter sounds like a great idea. I've noticed that many people will spend alot of $$ on dog beds, cat beds and etc. I just can't see spending that much, especially since our dog will still chew on her bed if she discovers a string or a corner sticking out. Plus her nails will eventually leave holes. So rather than pay a ton of cash for a bed that's probably not even worth half of what they charge you, I went and bought a few yards of fleece cloth. Black, so her hair doesn't blatantly show up. She loves it!

Sometimes Walmart has the little fleece baby blankets on sale for a $1 each. Good time to stock up on bedding for pets. I always snag a few when they are on sale. You are right, pet beds are pricy!

I'm given alot of old clothes and new ones and if they don't sell i give to the Homeles..that means pets too since they are in need when the weather changes..so a childs sweater just might fit one of the Furr babies...

You are right Rose. Matter of fact, we had trouble last winter finding sweaters for my large dogs. We bought childrens sweatshirts and cut the sleeves out. You can find plain ones cheap.
