Long distance friendships... How do you make them work?

I have two friends who have moved away, one out of state and one in another city...
We email and sometimes talk on the phone. I was wondering what others do to make long-distance friendships work when you do not have the funds to travel to see them?

pretty much all of my friends live far away. weve met in aol, Warcraft.. other online forums. once a year, during the summer months, they all migrate here for a week, or a weekend.. or whatever. its an endless stream of houseguests from as early as march straight through into october. its become known as The Gathering or Shindig(current year) and is a tradition weve upheld for the past 5 years now. i hate that these people live so far away that we dont get to see each other as often as wed like. but the summers are a real fun time. Shindig 2008 has been kicked off already.. with more expected this year than last as my husband and i have both made new friends over the last year. it looks to be a very great summer!

That sounds like a lot of fun. I am glad that you are able to spend time with all of your friends during the summer and glad that you keep on making good friends.

That is good. I am glad it is working out for the two of you. That feeling of being near to each other that you mentioned is priceless.

The communication should not be lost, because there are number of ways how you can communicate with each other likw through texting, emails, phone calls and the traditional writing letters. You should still keep in touch with each other no matter what happened.
